There’s a long standing tradition of music festivals in Ireland, from the Fleadh’s of yore with their bizarre intersection of trad and hippy folk revivalists, to the self organised beauty of the anti-nuclear festivals at Carnsore or the hilarity of a Dylan gig at Slane that broke out in a riot. The most romanticised of recent Irish festivals is the Semple Stadium Feiles, when sprawling night time chaos descended across a quite Irish town leading to jammed Liveline phonelines for about a week after and infuriated auld ones tearing the nation’s youth a new arsehole with verbal condemnation.
The tightening of planning legislation around festivals as a result of the chaotic nature of the Feiles led to a tragic respite from the multi-day festival from 1997 onwards. With a generation lacking any similar major rites of passage, the massive Slane one day events reigned supreme and there was always some fucker of a mate’s older brother to regale you with boastful tales of pissing, shitting and shaggin all over Thurles in contrast to the placid state of Slane. But lets see these thirty something suckers dance now cos we've been pissing on ourselves and getting our stomachs pumped at our own Feile - OXEGEN! Or so Denis Desmond's main man Brian ‘Biggie' Spollen would have us believe. But I'll see ye at the next boutique festival, yeah?

A former leader of the Orange Order and of the Ulster Unionist Party, the Reverend Martin Smyth described it as "the biggest folk festival in Europe". Here is an account of what some of the 'folk' get up to at this time of year - from The Irish News and Daily Ireland on one day. The Orange ‘folk’ do it most of the year, but go into a frenzy of celebration of their Protestant Britishness when the sun comes out. By the way the reference to ‘KAI’ sported by some Orangemen does not refer, as has been extensively reported, to “kill all Irish” – it is apparently a reference to an obscure Norwegian footballer who played for Glasgow Rangers. The slogan used to be KAT – “kill all Taigs” – but there was no Norwegian to whom the slogan could be attributed and so it had to be changed. read full story / add a comment

On Sunday around 2,000 people marched in Tel Aviv to demand the prisoner exchange and to end the assault on Lebanon. Clearly though this assault was in preparation a long term and they were just waiting for a pretext. Unfortunately the so-called free press in Israel did not cover the event and in the so-called democracy of Israel, three protesters were arrested under the guise of having a demonstration without a permit. read full story / add a comment

Kathy Kelly is a person of profound integrity, who knows how to walk the walk. She will testify at the trial of the Pitstop Ploughshares tomorrow in the Four Courts. In a climate in which the issue of Iraq and the use of Shannon has been put on the back burner for many, Kathy Kelly is there to remind us of what things are like on the ground for the ordinary people of Iraq as they continue to struggle with the ongoing daily realities of depleted uranium effects and ever escalating violence. Kathy has been a loyal and consistent supporter of the five on trial, having travelled to each of their trials and remained consistent in her support throughout the three-and-a-half years of legal proceedings. read full story / add a comment

The Dublin Shell to Sea Table Quiz is organised for Thursday the 13th of July in Doyle's Pub (opposite Trinity College, near Pearse Street Garda Station). It runs from 8pm to 11pm and teams of 4 will compete in ten rounds of questions. Residents in the locality have been warned that a dangerous, experimental raw quiz is planned to be installed in the area. The questions will be odourless, and at many times the pressure of a normal quiz. In the event of raffle, everyone in the audience might win a prize. And on foot of that attractive advertisement, I bravely went.............. read full story / add a comment

Today's Sunday Tribune had a delightful story about anarchist squatters on leeson street finally being evicted after years of being the centre of the anarchist/anti-capitalist community. Great story except the house has been deserted since april 2004 when police harrassment in the build up to Mayday 2004 forced the occupants to seek other accommodation. It had been occupied for around 9months. read full story / add a comment |
