Sgt Patrick D. Stewart died last September 25th in Afghanistan while serving the US military in Afghanistan. He was attached to the Nevada national guard and the helicopter he was travelling in was target of a rocket-propelled grenade. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze star, a distinguished veteran who had served in the US military mission to Korea and active combat in Operation Desertstorm.

Sgt. Patrick D. Stewart like any other distinguished combat veteran gets a memorial in his home town, though his body was cremated and his ashes scattered by his widow Roberta Stewart in Reno.

Last May 31st she organised a memorial of her own to protest a decision by the US "department of Veterans Affairs" who have refused to honour her husband's wishes that a pentacle be put on his stone. This constitutes a breach of the 1st amendment, as Wicca has been accepted by Federal Courts as a religion since 1995. read full story / add a comment

A large vibrant and vocal group of Irish born citizens , their parents and supporters gathered outside the Dail today pleading: " Let my parents work , Let my parents stay "

In keeping with the declared sentiments of the Irish Proclamation to `Cherish all the children of the nation equally` Gerry Adams amongst others came to give support to the protesters demands .
Along with Seamus Healy ( independant ) Joe Costello ( Labour ) Arthur Morgan ( Sinn Fein ) and Ciaron Cuff ( Green Party )
He welcomed them and their future valuable contribution to Irish society and expressed the hope that we would not forget our own recent past which saw so many leave Ireland. This sentiment was echoed by all the speakers present.

One mother stated "We are qualified , we have degrees , let us contribute to Irish society, let us work. We have Irish passports why should these children live in refugee camps ? " read full story / add a comment

It’s called distraction, shifting focus, drawing attention away from the real issues that beset the majority of humans on the planet. We are all anticipating another round of distracting emotive images on our televisions; things are not going well for the powers, it’s time for another ‘circuit’ of abuse awareness commercials, always topical and a guaranteed mind-shifter. The public consciousness is a well-managed resource – never doubt it! read full story / add a comment

On a bright Sunny morning over 30 people gathered in O'Connell Street to join the solidarity procession to the Four Courts in support of the the Five Pitstop Ploughshare defendants. A Solemn single file set of led by the defendents. At the Four Courts Carmen Trotter from NYC Catholic Workers and Ciaron O'Reilly addressed the crowd prior to entering Court 24 for the Jury selection. People were encouraged to maintain a vigil outside the courts to draw attention to the injustice of the Iraq war and Irish complicity in this. As I left most of the people were still there highlighting the Court case and people are encouraged to join as and when they are free to. The Morning Vigil will be a daily occurence gathering 8.30 a.m onwards at the Spire, O'Connell Street.

Ciaron O'Reilly adressed the crowd stating 'This is our Third Ploughsharers Trial, the (justice) system here is designed to isolate you, demoralise you ,defeat you and utlamately get you to recant from any resistance to it, and, the only anti venom we have is the sense of community and solidarity and one of the things that touches me today is the pluralism of our movement of budhist and catholic, agnostic and atheist, pagan, socialists and anarchist and people with all different hairstyles , all different musical tastes...and they want us to be very uniform, they want us to be consumers they do not want us to be active citizens we feel that we have acted of conscious. Now it is up to the conscious of the community; the jury. One of our last jury members is here today having been touched by our testimony to see how their act of conscience resonates with theirs (the jury) what is running in aberrance. between these two consciousness is a legal system that trys to take all act out of consciousness...' read full story / add a comment

Everyone is invited to Valencia city in the region of Valencia, eastern Spain to protest the visit of Joseph Ratzinger and the politics of the "5th Catholic Family World Day".

Protest will be non-violent and primarily based on two elements :- "Cacophony & Nudity".

Meaning naked and noisy protest groups will exercise their right to a summer cycle through the cities.

if you can't Adam and Eve it, that a a non-elected former nazi soldier and homophobe be welcomed to perform arcane rituals and preach intolerance and outdated values in a week of mourning for the victim of the Jesus Metro station disaster, then come to Valencia.

A 41 year old woman began a case in the High Court of Ireland yesterday, represented by Gerard Hogan SC to have 3 of her embryos released from the freezer of a fertility clinic in Rathgar Dublin. Or.... 3 embryos made for her by a clinic out of her eggs and her estranged husband's sperm.

Her case hinges on her belief and the Irish Courts interpretation of the Irish Constitution's relevant clauses and amendments - that each of the 3 frozen embryos has a "right to life".

This public meeting, hosted by Anti-War Ireland, is in support of the Pitstop Ploughshares, who are currently on trial in Dublin for their decommissioning of a US warplane at Shannon in early 2003.

Both speakers are very well known US anti-war activists - one who was present during the initial bombing of Baghdad and the other a former US marine who served in Iraq.

It promises to be a fascinating meeting and should provide useful insights into why anti-war activists, such the Ploughshares (Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Ciaran O'Reilly, Damien Moran and Karen Fallon), engaged in direct action against the US war machine at Shannon airport.

Speakers:

*Jimmy Massey, Iraq war veteran and US Marine Sgt.

*Kathy Kelly of "Voices in the Wilderness", who was present during the so-called 'Shock &
Awe' bombing of Baghdad.

8pm, Friday, July 14th.

Metropole Hotel, MacCurtain Street, Cork.

ALL WELCOME!!!

The work of the great Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miró will be brought vividly to life in a spectacular open-air theatre production at the Irish Museum of Modern Art at 3.00pm on Saturday 15 July 2006. Merma Neverdies, a colourful and entertaining critique of the abuse of power, draws on the Catalan tradition of street parades in a visually striking production for audiences of all ages. The play features a series of grotesque characters in the form of larger-than-life puppets, which are exact replicas of those created by Miró for his original production in 1978. Admission to the performance is free.

Candida Höfer: Dublin presents 11 works made while visiting Dublin in 2004, including photographs taken at the National Library of Ireland, Marsh’s Library, the Long Room in the Old Library of Trinity College, the Merrion Hotel, and the Great Hall, Chapel and Johnston Room of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. Although distinguished by titles indicating location, city, sequential number and date, these works are not so much records of architecture or geography as they are endeavours at capturing qualities inherent in the space – tranquillity, colour, light, atmosphere and the ambiguous relationship between space and absence. read full story / add a comment
