Michael McIlveen was just 15 when he was beaten to death by loyalists in Ballymena 10 days ago. His mother, Gina, has invited her MP, the Reverend Ian Paisley, to her son's funeral. This is a gesture which is as breathtakingly generous as Gordon Wilson's when he forgave the IRA after it murdered his daughter Marie in 1987. Gina McIlveen has asked the elected leader of the majority of the Protestant people to be by her side as she buries her son, murdered by Protestants because he was a Catholic. The invitation is courageous. It also contains a challenge. She is asking the DUP to show respect. read full story / add a comment

John Howard arrives in Ireland on Saturday on a four day trip where he will address the Dail and meet key business and political leaders. It is his first visit to Ireland since he was first elected Prime Minister of Australia ten years ago and one he sees as important because of 'the historical and sentimental links between the two countries'.

Howard is currently swamped in controversy surrounding kick-backs to Saddam Hussein, state treatment of Aboriginal peoples and Refugees, his support for George Bush and his decision to send the Navy to East Timor. As he is met by anti-war protesters in Washington, Irish activists are preparing their own welcome for this notorious war monger. read full story / add a comment

There are around 70-80 people presently outside the Cathedral in support of the men ( Revolt Video Pics going up asap on new thread)

A Group of students from the school across the road have joined in and there is lively chanting outside the Cathedrals front e.

Three men from Afghanistan living in Waterford have joined the protest, and have been refusing food/water from yesterday. Presently two are outside the Cathedral and I believe one has gained access. That makes 44 people on the Hunger/Thirst strike now

Latest news from the Hospital is that Abdul and Sultan are in a stable condition, some men inside are weakening and ambulances are on standby

Joe Higgins TD, Jerry Crolly TD and A. OSnoddaigh TD are present at the Cathedral although as of yet have not gained admission. There are also people from RAR, Revolt Video, Unmanageables, Socialist Party, Sinn Fein, AWI, AY, WSM, IAWM, WV and SWP attending and plenty of unaligned!

On Saturday, April 15th, 2006, British and Irish relatives and friends of International Brigaders marked the 70th anniversary of the formation of the International Brigades with a commemorative walk, led by Pauline Fraser, across the Pyrenees from France into Spain.

The ceremonies commenced in the French Pyrenean village of Las Illas, at the monument to mark the passing through that village in 1939 of the President of the Spanish Republic, the President of the Basque Republic and the President of the Generalitat of Catalunya - fleeing for their lives as refugees from the triumph of fascism in Spain. (In 1940 the Nazi German occupation authorities and the collaborationist Vichy French Government would hand over President Companys of Catalunya for subsequent execution by Franco’s Spanish fascists in Barcelona).

This monument also commemorates the same village as one of the routes through which International Brigade volunteers clandestinely entered a blockaded Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1938; as well as the route taken in the reverse direction in 1939 by a significant proportion of more than half a million Spanish Republican refugees.

A group of twenty to thirty refugees (UPDATE: numbers are now known to be 41) occupied St. Patricks Cathedral after today’s Cathedral Service. At least three minors are believed to be among the group of men. The group are seeking refugee status in Ireland and decided to hungerstrike after some of their applications were turned down last Friday by the Office of the Refugee Appeals Commissioner. Geen Party TD, Ciarán Cuffe has met some of the men and believes them to be genuine. read full story / add a comment

This aircraft was seen by Edward Horgan at Shannon airport on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 pm.
It took off about two hours later.
Connor Cregan got some photos of the take off which will be published later.
It has been seen regularly at Frankfurt in Germany. It is not yet clear whether it is controlled by the US Airforce or by the CIA. It is unusual for US Airforce to operate such unmaked planes. The Irish green white and gold colour scheme is a new innovation. It makes a change from World Airways flying in Aer Lingus colours. read full story / add a comment
