A picture of awesome indecency is about to hit news-stands across Europe today. Big Swinging Mickey Mc Dowell & the Mammy Harney having a snog on the Irish Independent. Thats thier way of portraying a united party after Michael tried like many before to belt in the girth of Harney's ambition. The party that gave us FF coalition governments and put the squeeky clean into FF slime. The worst ministers of Justice & Health in the history of the state. At the same time we hear of FF backbenchers marching on Bertie's office to demand their concerns be addressed...( all of a sudden they have concerns... ) That means they've started worrying about thier seats facing the implosion of the next general election. read full story / add a comment

While Driving through Ennis town yesterday afternoon a local anti-war activist put six young US service men under (citizens) arrest. On Thursday morning an US troop carrier landed at Shannon with technical problems. This is a common occurrence with the chartered troop carriers that come through Shannon Airport. With an average of 1100 hundred troops going through Irelands second international airport on a nightly basis these aircraft are flat out ferrying young men and women to Iraq. Many of these stranded soldiers were billeted at the West County Hotel in Ennis near where peace activist Conor Cregan encountered six young US servicemen on the main Ennis to Limerick road. read full story / add a comment

Families divided by ideals Ken Loach's award-winning The Wind That Shakes the Barley captures the tragic texture of the War of Independence and the Civil War, writes Luke Gibbons At one point in The Wind That Shakes the Barley, an Irish audience is depicted watching a film about the War of Independence that gives rise to uproar in the cinema. The film is a newsreel outlining the details of the Treaty that had just been negotiated between the Sinn Féin delegation led by Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith, and the British cabinet fronted by Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. Responding initially with cheers, the mood of the audience divides and darkens as the realities of the historic compromise are spelled out on the screen. In this we have, perhaps, a dress rehearsal for Ken Loach's work since the 1960s, which has managed not just to entertain but to agitate audiences and bring viewers, in more ways than one, to their feet. read full story / add a comment

TV review: Documentariy on the making of The Wind that Shakes the Barley Good in parts 'Rebel County' Hidden History. RTE 1 Tuesday, 13 June. Pat Collins, Producer/Director, Harvest Films This documentary on the War of Independence in Cork, using Ken Loach's prize winning The Wind that Shakes the Barely as a backdrop was, like the curate's egg, good in parts. Interviews with Ken Loach, Scriptwriter Paul Laverty, academic historians and relatives of those who fought, illustrated the fight against the RIC, Tans, Auxiliaries and regular British forces. The story of the "ordinary people" who in Ken Loach's words "were able to shake the might of the Empire" was well expressed. So too was the effect on the community of the torture and executions of IRA prisoners. Post-torture photographs of Tom Hales and Pat Harte, hit with hammers and their fingernails pulled out, and with Harte forced to hold up a Union Jack, was reminiscent of more recent US torture in Abu Ghraib, read full story / add a comment

While Over 20,000 people marched in Vienna yesterday in opposition to George Bush's arrival, Austria's "KinderGarten Anarchists" (KGA) used the opportunity to meet other young anarchists and spread their ideas to the youth of their nation. George Bush became the first US president to visit Austria in over 27years yesterday as he arrived for an EU-US summit similar to the one held in Shannon (Ireland) in 2004. Police bomb squads blew up three suspicious packages and closed down the airport-city motorway in preparation for the visit while planned protests passed off peacefully with only a handful of arrests despite huge police numbers. read full story / add a comment

Residents in the vicinity of the construction being undertaken on the site of the recently demolished Fatima Mansions today protested at the entrance of their estate over the inadequacy of a long time promised traffic management system which had been promised to them prior to construction work beginning. Two simultaneous blockades were mounted at either end of Lorreta Road, residents joined and left with a fluctuating prescence of anywhere between ten and fifteen maintaining the line on either side of the estate. Marylands is an estate located close to the canal, just off Marrowbone Lane beside Cork Street. Traffic on any given day on Marrowbone Lane is hectic, with cars using it as a route to cut through the Liberties to reach Cork St, leaving a very narrow artery dangerously clogged with passage for cyclists generally untenable at peak hours without using the paths. read full story / add a comment

BBC reports that company "ignored accident warning" Protesters against the Corrib gas scheme have often highlighted the appalling terms of the contract whereby the shareholders of the Shell, Statoil, Marathon Oil, and even the people of Norway, will gain more than the people of Ireland from the exploitation of Irish natural resources. Others however, claim that private operators simply would not be attracted to the Irish scene if the government didn't give them such a good deal (so what difference would it make?). However the thing that no-one can argue about is safety. No-one believes that people should be forced to live beside an experimental piece of industrial equipment carrying explosive gas at extremly high pressure, if there is a chance that it might explode. Everyone agrees- if it's not safe, it shouldn't be built. Shell say it is safe, but the following report from the BBC casts doubt on the company's attitude to safety. read full story / add a comment

I got a Hard Rain in recently and it blew me away. It's a photographic exploration of the effects of climate change illustrating Bob Dylan's prophetic lyrics. Everyone should read this book and I don't care where you get it so long as you get a look at it. If any book can shake people out of their complacency, this is the one. Make your libraries buy it, show it to your friends, family and co-workers, show it to everyone you meet every day. Read it and weep. And then do something about it. read full story / add a comment

Planning law in this country is a joke. For years the odds have been stacked in favour of unsustainable development and now the FF/PD coalition is making it harder for communities to legally challenge those who are making fortunes out of wrecking the place, be they speculators, developers, multi-nationals, politicans, contractors, quarrymen or even archaeologists (but not this one). read full story / add a comment

The Connolly Festival took place last weekend on Friday evening and all day Saturday. It was well attended by a large and diverse group of activists. On Friday night the same sex marriage discussion was packed to the brim with the meeting overflowing into the next room. What follows are some quotes and notes on what the different contributors said. Marie Mulholand : “More than 10 years ago two female friends of mine lived together in a couple and had a child together, living in London. One of these friends, Deborah, was involved in the Nicaraguan support community and wanted to visit Nicaragua. She drowned over there. Our union (UNISON) worked with Nicaraguan comrades to get the body home. Deborah had been ostracised by her family when she came out. They had had no contact with her since, didn’t know she had a child. When Anne arrived to the airport to the body arriving home, they found out that only the “family” had the rights to the body. No one was at the ceremony, only her parents, who had ostracised her. It was a horrendous situation. There were no rights for Anne. It was a painful experience for all of us who were gay, it brought home with such force exactly where we stood. The experience never left me.” read full story / add a comment |
