Director of Tan War film The Wind that Shakes the Barley rejects British tabloid ‘vitriol’ against his work saying ‘partition has failed’ and the unionist veto should be replaced ‘by a way of unravelling the sad legacy of the 1921 treaty’ The acclaimed film-maker Ken Loach yesterday hit back at British press criticism of his award-winning film on the Tan War. Speaking exclusively to Daily Ireland last night, the 69-year-old director said some of the criticism had been of an “amazingly vitriolic and personal nature”. He said it had been movitated by a “deep-seated imperialist guilt” over the partition of Ireland and the subsequent years of conflict that had resulted. Mr Loach said the British government should now acknowledge that “partition had failed”. He said the “unionist veto” on political progress should be replaced by a way of “unravelling the sad legacy of the 1921 Treaty.” read full story / add a comment

Belfast actor Niall Cusack attended the launch of the republication of Ruth Dudley Edward's biography of Patrick Pearse, at Queens University Bookshop. He recounts Ruth's performance, including his own bit-part in the proceedings - taken from the just published June Irish Political Review. Ms Ruth Dudley Edwards in person inspires a number of adjectives - 'frail' first and foremost. One thinks of Blanche in 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. Other adjectives include: fragile, confused, nostalgic, brave, timid, hopeful, pessimistic... oh, one could ransack Roget! She chose to devote her entire speech at the launch of her book in the Bookshop at Queen's in Belfast to a review in this journal (May IPR page 3, graphic attached) and to the absurd allegations made by 'a well-known eccentric' called Jack Lane. 'He may be here now!' she cried, with great bravado, peering around a uniformly sycophantic Queen's academic audience. A shudder went round the room. But no, the Great Ogre was conspicuous by his absence. read full story / add a comment

The attempt by Michael Mc Dowell to defuse the crisis over the statutory rape ruling of Last week, and the Laffoy decision on the Mister A case smacks of indolence. The usual political opportunism of the Government is revealed in an attempt to bury the issue in the Summer recess and hope it will all go away. The catalogue of Laissez -faire policy indicated by the State's refusal to deal with the issue which was amply signposted and reported in Yesterday's article is compounded by reports that the state was told in 1990 by the Law Reform Commission that the law should be changed , because it was open to constitutional challenge on the grounds of reasonable belief. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 3rd June 2006, the family and friends of Terence Wheelock along with supporters of their campaign for Justice will gather for a vigil at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sean McDermott St, Dublin 1 at 12pm, a year and a day to the date upon which Terence was arrested and taken to Store St Garda Station, from where he was later to leave in a coma for the Mater Hospital. Three and a half months later he died. The Garda Síochána claim the injuries which ultimately resulted in his death were self inflicted, yet their actions subsequent to his arrest and detention lead any reasonable person to suspect otherwise. The recent unwarranted invasion of the Wheelock home and ongoing documented intimidation of the family as they continue to search for the truth, confirm for many these suspicions. Following the vigil a peaceful protest will be held at Store St Garda. All supporters of a civil society where a person's life is not endangered or threatened by the powers of the state; a society where justice is not exclusively a posession of the priveleged and dominant, are asked to attend. More info: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/76137 Below is the harrowing story of Garda malpractice, harrasment and obstruction of justice through the words of Terence's mother Esther and brother Larry. (note: this interview was conducted some weeks prior to documented attack on the Wheelock home, recently and reported here on Indymedia and in the Village Magazine last week) read full story / add a comment

national / environment / other press Wednesday May 31, 2006 01:31 by Shell to Sea
There have been a number of interesting stories circulating about Frank Fahey recently. The former minister for the Marine and Natural Resources was instrumental in the initial planning stages of the Corrib Gas scheme, and was at the time accused of using "bullying tactics" to secure Shell's preferred option - an onshore pipeline connecting the sea bed with a giant gas refinery built on a peat bog at Bellinaboy. While questions have been asked about the Minister's close working relationship with Andy Pyle, CEO of Shell Exploitation Ireland, and whether he was lobbying for them with simply the best interests of the people of Ireland at heart, his critics have not had much firm ammunition to throw at him. Eyebrow-raising stories of his financial dealings have always circulated as gossip, and he had to repay a large sum for misusing government stationary a few years ago. Many people have questioned how a former teacher can have amassed a huge property portfolio, but it all doesn't add up to that much really. Up to now, he hasn't had to fear having to resign. The revelations in the article below about a Moscow Hair Salon might change all that. Of course, if a central archiitect of the scheme to build the pipeline was forced to resign because of financial impropriety, then we could add that to the many questions that have arisen about the reasons for government backing of the giveaway of natural resources, stretching right back to Ray Burke. I wonder if Fahey will survive a summer when the Fianna Fáil party is getting jittery about the upcoming election. There was a curious comment about Frank Fahey in the Irish Times article way back when he was appointed Minister, looking back now it seems ironic: Quote: On Mr Fahey's new role in the Marine and Natural Resources, a Fianna Fail source said yesterday: "There is not too much damage he can do in Marine and Fisheries." read full story / add a comment

In Co. Cork, the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) wants to route 12-14km of overhead Power Lines and Pylons from Dromourneen to Ballylickey, just North of Bantry in West Cork. 27 local landowners who form the Bantry Concerned Action Group are saying NO because of health, safety and environmental concerns. They say ... 'Put the power line under the ground, where it's safer and it's impact is less severe.' The ESB say 'No, we'll put it where we want and the Electricity Supply Act of 1927 gives us the power to do what we like on your land'. In Co. Limerick, the communities of Kildimo and Pallaskenry are fighting for the retention of their Spring Water source and supply from Bleach Lough lake, while Limerick County Council want to connect them to a new water supply ... the polluted, yes POLLUTED River Deel! Both communites have been forced reluctantly into the last resort of blocking machinery and personnel THIS WEEK, and are CALLING OUT FOR SUPPORT. read full story / add a comment

As we all had better know by now, a child rapist known as "Mr A". was released from custody this afternoon as a result of a Supreme Court Judgement made last week which ruled that the Statutory Rape Act of 1935 is unconstitutional. At 38 years of age he plied a 12 year old with alcohol and received a 3 year sentance which would have been served in its entirety later this year. Against that backdrop, the worst minister for Justice this state has ever endured, presented to the cabinet his proposals for new legislation on the age of consent and sexual offences relating to the underage, teenagers & mature persons. I really think the reader would do well to consider this news, and concern themselves with the issues which have emerged. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 27th May, Ogra Shinn Fein in strabane held a "Smash Political Policing" protest at railway street in the town. The protest was in response to the recent harassment of young Republicans in west Tyrone by the RUC/PSNI. During the protest, a number of Ogra Shinn Fein activists occupied the rooftop of the library and dropped a banner reading "Smash Political Policing Now". The protestors sounded airhorns and whistles to get the public's attention, while activists on the ground distributed information leaflets on political policing. While returning from the protest one young activist was approached and grabbed by a member of the RUC/PSNI, though when confronted by another group of protestors the harassment ceased. read full story / add a comment |
