The decision by Mr Prodi to honour the public will of the Italian people and withdraw the Italian presence in Iraq, and also to describe the war as "illegal" and a "mistake" has allowed Italians to give more attention to the manipulation of information during the Berlusconi years and return to the causes of Italian casualties & hostages during the Iraq war. The most senior officer of the Italian forces to be killed was Nicola Calipari of the Italian secret service who was shot by the US army. on the 4th of March 2004, after one month spent in captivity, Giuliana Sgrena a journalist of the italian newspaper "il Manifesto" was released after negotiations had been opened by Calipari and brought to "safety". Their route had been communicated to their US coalition partners before hand. It is important to remember that the murder of Calipari and his subsequent state funeral prompted Berlusconi to first suggest the withdrawl of troops, but unconstitutionally, as he made the offer through his own TV station & not in parliament. Giuliana Sgrena has now published a book on her experiences & granted an interview, which I am reproducing in english translation here. read full story / add a comment

Mc Dowell wanted us to ponder this :- "Probably the most important one is that the United Nations high commissioner's representative in Ireland and his predecessor have both pointed to the fact that the Irish system is one of the best in Europe and that it's a good and fair one and that it's transparent, that it's subject to judicial review." Most of us of course disagree. But one word of Mc Dowell's statement made last week & republished again in today's Irish Times screams out for more attention :- "Transparent". read full story / add a comment

After spending a long week outside St. Patricks Cathedral Anarchist Youth yesterday held a film showing to allow everyone to relax. We chose to show the major hollywood film "V For Vendetta" for free as we are opposed to the idea of entertainment as a commodity and intellectual property laws that outlaw downloading and sharing information (movies, music, games, software). The following is the basic text of a talk given before the film. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday we witnessed one of Ireland’s first organised racist counter demonstrations. The demonstrators while being made up of what can only be described as very disenfranchised poor who were joined in the evenings by an assortment of drunks. But there was at least on Saturday afternoon a number of ordinary working class residents who were angered at the attention being drawn to the refugees, while their local area suffered huge social problems. read full story / add a comment

national / anti-war / imperialism / news report Friday May 19, 2006 13:10 by Irish Anti War Movement
Abu Baker Deghayes’ brother Omar has been in Guantanamo Bay prison for five years. The Irish Anti War Movement has organised a tour of meetings next week where Abu Baker will speak about the illegal kidnapping, detention and torture of his brother Omar Deghayes. Omar and his family left Libya 1986 after his father, a democrat and trade unionist, was assassinated by Colonel Gaddafi's regime. In 2001 Omar travelled to Afghanistan where he met and married his wife and had a son. When war broke out they moved to Pakistan. Omar was arrested by bounty-hunters and sold to the US Military. The only "evidence" for his arrest was a video from the Spanish authorities allegedly showing Omar. But experts have confirmed that the person in the video isn't Omar. While in prison Omar was tortured using pepper spray in his eyes, so much was used that he is now completely blind in one eye. The US authorities also allowed Libyan interrogators to interview him. They threatened him, saying, "In here I cannot do anything, but if I meet you later I will kill you”. read full story / add a comment |
