Ballymoney Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí McKay has just completed a speaking tour of the Basque Country. The Rasharkin man, who was there representing Ógra Shinn Féin, was to be accompanied by a member of the South African ANC but they were refused access to the region by the Spanish Government. Journalists who were to interview the Sinn Féin man were also subject to harassment from the Spanish authorities. On Friday Cllr McKay gave the opening address - in Basque - at the Basque Topagunea Festival, the first big festival since the ETA Ceasefire and which was attended by over 20,000 people.

Upstanding decent folk throughout the english speaking anglo-saxon world have had enough of suffering in silence at the latest assault of Satan on their values. As cable and network TV shows us Mr Brad Pitt's "first tattoo", others' attention and concern is aimed at the NHS (national health service) of Great Britian, where tax-payers are expected to pay for the removal of a tattoo from a navy veteran who is strong word here - transsexual. & Doctors warn on the risks of leprosy and syphilis from piercings. read full story / add a comment

ARAN's nude demonstration has again made headlines in Northern Ireland with almost a dozen photographers coming along with a crew from UTV live television who covered our protest on today's national evening television which also showed a recent undercover investigation by Animal Defenders International. This attention is now ensuring everyone knows how cruel circuses with animals really are and never to support such acts.

a little human interest thing I've found today on Italian commercial media, its a video put together by US satirists ( & I suppose pacifists ) of cut & pastes of G.W. Bush speeches so as to simulate the great wookie singing the John Lennon song "Imagine".

Its worth going to the link and watching, It would even be worth copying and playing in your little nightclubs, crossroad dances, social centres, homes, and wherever ye congregate. read full story / add a comment

Last night (Tuesday 18th April2006) saw the very first Tara Session Gigs kick off at the Dice Bar, Queen Street Dublin with great music from Longtails and Alice Jago.
Organised by Tarawatch, these weekly gigs are intended to raise awareness of the campaign to save Tara and the archaeology of the Skryne Valley from the proposed motorway, and of course to raise some much needed shekels for the fight. No entrance fee, free music and a good cause were enough to tempt a good turn-out for the first gig – and it was a great way to spend a Tuesday evening.

Northwoods to be replanted
mayo / environment / press release Wednesday April 19, 2006 00:38 by Keith Martin- Councillor   text 3 comments (last - thursday april 20, 2006 00:21)   image 2 images
6 years after Keith Martin began campaigning for the replanting of the Northwoods area Westport Town Council confirms it will begin works in the area in May.

Cllr Keith Martin has also welcomed the news that the replanting of the Northwoods will go ahead this November.

Cllr Martin says he "can assure the council that there has been full consultation on this matter. I spent the day at the Leisure Park for the consultation meeting and I serve as the Pairc Na Coille Representative on the Northwoods Neighbouring Consultation Committee.

"It is over 6 years since I took up a petition to have the Northwoods replanted. And I welcome the commitment made here today to begin works in May and June and for planting to begin in November at the latest.

"The upgrading of the pavements will be most welcome as will any appropriate signage. What was made clear to me at the consultation in November 2005 was that no-one wants any more furniture in the woods.

"Benches and seating are being used as locations for anti social behaviour. The general consensus is that it should be removed altogether and not expanded on.

"I want to note the work put into this project by Simon Wall and Peter Gill and I look forward to the conclusion of this on-going sore-point by the end of this year." read full story / add a comment
is this the DEATH of our garden?
dublin / environment / feature Wednesday April 19, 2006 00:06 by dolphins barn gardener   text 18 comments (last - thursday april 19, 2007 15:51)   image 22 images
Builders and machinery have moved in, trees and plants have been taken up and it looks like it might be the end for the Dolphins Barn Community Garden, which celebrated its first birthday on Wednesday the 12th of April. Presently the garden crew has 54 people on its mailing list and there have been at least twice that in the garden.

After nearly a year of what turned out to be a really positive experiment in sustainable urban gardening, re-establishment of community, healthy use of derelict space and the creation of new friendships, things have taken a change for the worse… but it might not be the end. There is the possibility of revisiting the issue later in the year, but the gardening project has been put on hold for the moment after a number of meetings with the owners of the land where the garden is established. read full story / add a comment
