dublin / miscellaneous / press release Wednesday April 19, 2006 12:43 by Geraldine Moorkens Byrne
Last night (Tuesday 18th April2006) saw the very first Tara Session Gigs kick off at the Dice Bar, Queen Street Dublin with great music from Longtails and Alice Jago. Organised by Tarawatch, these weekly gigs are intended to raise awareness of the campaign to save Tara and the archaeology of the Skryne Valley from the proposed motorway, and of course to raise some much needed shekels for the fight. No entrance fee, free music and a good cause were enough to tempt a good turn-out for the first gig – and it was a great way to spend a Tuesday evening. read full story / add a comment
mayo / environment / press release Wednesday April 19, 2006 00:38 by Keith Martin- Councillor
6 years after Keith Martin began campaigning for the replanting of the Northwoods area Westport Town Council confirms it will begin works in the area in May. Cllr Keith Martin has also welcomed the news that the replanting of the Northwoods will go ahead this November. Cllr Martin says he "can assure the council that there has been full consultation on this matter. I spent the day at the Leisure Park for the consultation meeting and I serve as the Pairc Na Coille Representative on the Northwoods Neighbouring Consultation Committee. "It is over 6 years since I took up a petition to have the Northwoods replanted. And I welcome the commitment made here today to begin works in May and June and for planting to begin in November at the latest. "The upgrading of the pavements will be most welcome as will any appropriate signage. What was made clear to me at the consultation in November 2005 was that no-one wants any more furniture in the woods. "Benches and seating are being used as locations for anti social behaviour. The general consensus is that it should be removed altogether and not expanded on. "I want to note the work put into this project by Simon Wall and Peter Gill and I look forward to the conclusion of this on-going sore-point by the end of this year." read full story / add a comment
dublin / environment / feature Wednesday April 19, 2006 00:06 by dolphins barn gardener
Builders and machinery have moved in, trees and plants have been taken up and it looks like it might be the end for the Dolphins Barn Community Garden, which celebrated its first birthday on Wednesday the 12th of April. Presently the garden crew has 54 people on its mailing list and there have been at least twice that in the garden. After nearly a year of what turned out to be a really positive experiment in sustainable urban gardening, re-establishment of community, healthy use of derelict space and the creation of new friendships, things have taken a change for the worse… but it might not be the end. There is the possibility of revisiting the issue later in the year, but the gardening project has been put on hold for the moment after a number of meetings with the owners of the land where the garden is established. read full story / add a comment

national / anti-capitalism / opinion/analysis Tuesday April 18, 2006 15:41 by Terence
In this article the case is made that once the disastrous consequences of Climate Change and Peak Oil begin to bite that Great Britain will almost certainly re-invade the whole of Ireland again to gain access to our land and agricultural resources to help either supply the mainland and also to transfer some of it's population here. The timeline for this could be within the next decade or so. And why Ireland? Quite simply because we are so near. Why not? And how ironic it would be if this happened to occur in 2016? read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War’s Easter Commemoration was completely different from anything seen in the city. The audience of over 100 people had the opportunity to listen to a series of speakers, including the main oration given by a British-based Libyan, Abubaker Deghayes, who spoke about the situation of his brother Omar who is an internee in the infamous US controlled Guantanamo Bay camp for four years now. read full story / add a comment

dublin / anti-war / imperialism / feature Monday April 17, 2006 21:45 by Casement deserves better
In the run up to the 90th anniversary of 1916 many wondered how best to mark the event. Some marched the day before, some a few hours after. But the teflon Taoiseach trod where few men dared. At 12.00 he was at the GPO to commemorate an insurrection against imperialism. At 15.00 he was sending the troops in against an anti-imperialist demonstration. read full story / add a comment

The "Political Editor" of the Irish Independent has written an unsigned, bylineless, provo-bashing article which adulates the display of centralised military power. It is amusing that this display, which aims to project a hyper-nationalist sensibility claimed to be residing solely in FF, has been put on by a government that has surrendered national sovereign to a foreign power and allows the national territory of Ireland to be abused in an illegal war. Even more amusing is the apparent approval with which the "Minister for Justice" Michael McDowell is quoted: "We have to remember that there is one State, one Army, one Constitution." No wonder the "Political Editor" was too ashamed to put his name on it! Full article quoted below for those that don't want to log onto the website of William Martin Murphy's republican bashing rag: read full story / add a comment
