Crimes against humanity including torture.

When George Bush passed through Shannon airport on Tuesday morning last, he insulted the Irish people by reviewing US troops who were also passing through Shannon airport, in direct violation of Irish neutrality and international law. This is not something new of course. Cambodia and Laos were also neutral states in the 1960s and 1970s when the US government used B52 bombers, to kill hundreds of thousands of their people. The UN remained silent then, and is silent now on US crimes against humanity. read full story / add a comment

The challenge currently under way in the High Court to the lunatic M3 motorway has brought out an important fact that the corporate media have, as is their wont with important facts, ignored:

that the present administration has done more to undermine heritage protection than any in the Republic's history.

The Socialist Party condemns those who orchestrated Saturday's violence. It was a sectarian riot to prevent the Love Ulster group marching through Dublin. My party believes that the Love Ulster campaign is based on sectarianism and that its activities heighten sectarian divisions and encourage disunity among working class people, especially in Northern Ireland. We strongly oppose the political agenda and the activities of Love Ulster, but we recognise its right to march and protest in the centre of Dublin. The Socialist Party equally recognises the rights of others to indicate peaceful opposition to Love Ulster through disciplined protest, but they have no right to stop others marching as happened on Saturday in Dublin. My party strongly opposes the political agenda of both orange and green sectarians, whether in the North or on the streets of Dublin. read full story / add a comment

In a deeply alarming Democracy Now interview with Liz McIntyre and Annalee Newitz, a future world of nightmarish aspect, of total intrusion is painted.

"Imagine a world of no more privacy.
"Where your every purchase is monitored and recorded in a database, and your every belonging is numbered. Where someone many states away or perhaps in another country has a record of everything you have ever bought, of everything you have ever owned, of every item of clothing in your closet -- every pair of shoes. What's more, these items can even be tracked remotely.

"Once your every possession is recorded in a database and can be tracked, you can also be tracked and monitored remotely through the things you wear, carry and interact with every day.

Heres a group of writers who are prepared to stand up for democracy against Islamic Fundamentalism. The writers include Salman Rushdie , Ayaan Hirsi Ali - Somali-born Dutch MP, Maryam Namazie - Iranian writer living in Britain and Taslima Nasreen - exiled Bangladeshi writer, with fatwa issued ordering her execution. Their statement deserves the support of every socialist and secularist.

it is proposed by the DCBA that cleaner streets and no graffitti lead to less crime.

To this end, Dublin City Council is unanymous in wanting to go into partnership with them.

Two elements to anti-graffitti plan: a)., a third machine for "cleaning" the walls, and b)., employing proffessional artists to do murals, because, " If we paint on side of buildings, graffitti artists don’t like defacing other artists work, so this’ll stop ‘em…"
