THE ORIGINS AND ORGANISATION OF BRITISH PROPAGANDA IN IRELAND IN 1920, by Brian P Murphy. Published by the Aubane Historical Society and Spinwatch

Book Launch: FRIDAY MARCH 24 - 7.45pm Teachers Club Dublin

IRELAND & IRAQ
From Ireland to Iraq governments attempt to control and to direct the media in order to disseminate the 'official' version of the facts. Brian Murphy shows how the British government did it in Ireland. This important work details how the British propaganda machine in Ireland was organised in 1920. Murphy's original research illustrates the power of, and the origin of, 'spin'.

Murphy's research has been praised widely, and this is reflected in comments on the back cover of the book from Edward S Herman, Mark Curtis, Meda Ryan, Ruan O'Donnell, John Borgonovo and Farrel Corcoran. read full story / add a comment

A manifestation to show solidarity with the Shelltosea campaign in Ireland took place at the Shell Station at Ullevi in Göteborg on Saturday 18th February as part of the International Day of Action in support of the campaign. The station is located along a dual carriageway which runs near the city centre so the main impact of the action was that lots of passers by saw the banner and placards. The banner read "Bojkatta Shell" while the placards read "SOLIDARITETSAKTION med KAMPANJEN 'Shell To Sea' pĺ IRLAND. Friends of the Earth (Miljöförbundet Jordens Vänner, Göteborg) brought 'along their mobile display box decorated with Shelltosea posters and a Statoil advertisement with "Greenwash" printed accross it. read full story / add a comment

Concerned citizens and activists are planning to hold a vigil next Thursday, 23 February at 5.30pm at The Diamond, Ranelagh, Dublin (and, if possible, also outside Justice Minister McDowell's constituency office) in a bid to force him to implement the law regarding aircraft landing at Shannon Airport. The recent controversy over some caricatures of Mohammed gave the Islamists an opportunity to wage a hysterical protest internationally. In many cases, this took a violent form and was clearly aimed at silencing those who dared to even portray Mohammed.

In these demonstrations - across the world and in London, the very heart of Europe - many of the banners on show were emblazoned with shameful slogans. These included - “Those who insult Islam must be beheaded” and “Freedom go to hell” plus various other fatwa’s and threats against cartoonists and others who have the temerity to “insult” Islam.

This is not the first time these forces have attacked people’s rights in the Middle East and Europe. Many writers, singers, even barbers and doctors have been targeted in the last 30 years let alone the enslavement of women in the Middle East under the pretext of the defence of the ‘honour’ of Islam. The furore over these caricatures is simply an excuse to stage another worldwide campaign to attack the right of freedom of expression. They want to turn Europe into yet another battlefield for their foul ideas.

This whole episode started in what appeared to be a harmless way. Danish author Kĺre Bluitgen wanted to write a children’s book on the life of Mohammed, but was unable to find an artist prepared to illustrate it for him (ironically the book has since been published, complete with illustrations, although the artist insisted on anonymity). The editors of Jyllands-Posten claim they decided to test out this unwillingness to depict the prophet by asking 25 cartoonists to send then an image of Mohammed “as they saw him”. Thirteen refused, but the other 12 were all published in the newspaper. There seems little doubt that the exercise was intended as a provocation.
