In the recent past an American grandmother demonstrating against the tyrant Bush, held a placard as she marched on the Capital, it read, “The Road to Hell is lined with Bushes”. It is now evident that this grandmother (who puts younger Americans to shame) was exhibiting prophetic or intuitive insight. In that period Bush was relatively tame. This American woman and true patriot is an inspiration to us all. read full story / add a comment

With 51.1% of the vote, Evo Morales, coca farmers’ leader and head of the MAS (Movement Towards Socialism) has decisively won the December 18 presidential elections and is set to become Bolivia’s first indigenous president. These elections were yet another sign of the radicalisation and move to the left of the masses of Latin America and represent just the first one of eleven important electoral contests which will take place in different countries across the continent over the next year. read full story / add a comment

Time is very special, and no-one really knows who owns it. One thing is clear - we don't. But over the millenia we have seen the state or church whichever was more powerful at that particular time meddle with both calenders and hours.

On the 31st of December 2005, an extra second will be added to the world's clocks meaning the year will last 31536001 seconds rather than the usual 3156000. read full story / add a comment

In a few days mostly un-noticed by most, EU presidential power will go from the UK to another member of the 25 states, the lucky recipient is Austria.

Austria has quite a history, it used have an empire. & in the last years almost all of its ex-posessions have joined the Europe of 25.

It is also a neutral state, its neutrality being a condition of its post war occupation and partition when rather than being held responsible for WW2 it was declared the first victim of Nazism. Despite the fact that Hitler was an austrian and the majority of Concentration camp directors were austrian too. read full story / add a comment

At Shannon District Court (held in Ennis), Judge Mangan yesterday held the Constitution and the Rights of Citizens in utter contempt when he shat upon, and then pissed all over, both.

At the last hearing of this case, on 8th Dec 2005, Mr. Cregan was dragged out of court by Gardai on the orders of Judge Mangan - see link - http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=73376 read full story / add a comment

There were lots of elections in 2005, only a few of which got covered on indymedia ireland. But because the idea of democracy really took off so much, I wasn't able to write a "how did they vote or "not vote"" article as had in previous years been attempted.

Just a quick recap - listed here.
{My personal favourite was the Andorran general election.}

The economic boom in Ireland and the construction boom that has come alongside it has led to a growth in the importance of environmental campaigns. There has frequently been a large gap between the environmentalists involved in such campaigns and the left - including anarchists. Having worked in a Bodyshop in Dublin for almost 5 weeks during the year, I was disgusted and appalled at how they treat their staff and mislead the public into thinking that they are environmentally friendly, their products not tested on animals and are for fair trade. Working there was a real eye-opener. read full story / add a comment
