Judgment reserved in Rossport Five case Last updated: 25-10-05, 11:47 The 'Rossport Five' pictured after their release from Cloverhill Prison last month The five Mayo men who spent 94 days in prison for their contempt of court over protests against a controversial gas pipeline will have to wait to learn whether they face further penalties. The High Court today reserved judgment on the case of the five, who spent more than three months in Cloverhill Prison for failing to abide by an injunction preventing them from protesting against the high-pressure pipeline. The 70-kilometre pipe runs through some of men's land, only metres from their homes, from the Corrib gas field in the Atlantic to an onshore refinery at Bellanaboy. Last week saw the publication of this year's "transparency org" world corruption perception report. Its a report which is taken seriously by some, and certainly no country looking for foreign investment wants to be at the bottom of the 158 rankings. But both the annual list of "corruption perception" and "bribery perception" indixes, can not be understood as isolated statistics. Just as Greenspan's biographer assured us he takes stock of over 4000 weekly indicators, we can not consider just one single country or economy when discussing corruption or bribery. Nor can we refuse to draw in other human development indicators, (the UNHDR report) all the usual "facts and figures" and internal data. read full story / add a comment

Together with Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Karen Fallon and Damien Moran, Ciaron is one of the group known as the Pit Stop Ploughshares. In early February 2003, these five took part in the non-violent disarmament of a US Navy War Plane at Shannon airport. They have been charged with US$2.5 million damage to the plane, which was forced to return to Texas rather than continue its journey to Iraq. Their trial begins on Monday Oct 24th 2005 at the Four Courts, Dublin, Ireland. This article gives a brief insight into the motivations of these dedicated peace activists. read full story / add a comment
