Brussels – Peer, August 5th 2005 - Belgian mayors and a group of 50 international peace walkers will gather in Peer, Belgium, near the U.S. nuclear weapons base of Kleine Brogel on Saturday 6th August, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. They will also call for the removal of U.S. nuclear weapons and a global ban on nuclear weapons. Also present at the ceremony will be Mr. Yoshio Sato, survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. The event will be hosted by local mayor and MP Theo Kelchtermans (CD&V) at the main church in Peer. Several Belgian mayors will speak out during the ceremony to support the “Mayors for Peace” campaign for a nuclear weapons free world. read full story / add a comment

Art Encounter 2005 was an artistic exchange which saw young artists from Cork, Nicaragua and Columbia living and working together in Cork for the month of July. The culmination of the months work was a public art exhibition in St. Dominic's Meditation Centre, Colmcille Avenue, Mayfield from 2st to 23rd July. As part of this exhibition an art encounter tent was set up for 3 days in the city centre at Emmet place, a recently rejuvinated street outside the Crawford art gallery and Cork Opera house, in which a giant postcard was created on which members of the public were invited to share their dreams with the world. here are some of the dreams. the postcard is being sent out to the Venice Bienelle ("the art olympics"). There is nothing like a knock on the head to wake you up and make you reevaluate the things around you. Sitting here with a bump on my left temple that is as stubborn as ever and refuses to go away . I can only sit back and think about the severity of the health care system here in Ireland. I must admit I'm coming from a completely biased perspective, someone who grew up with a public health care system, but here it is anyways. read full story / add a comment

The first London solidarity picket for the 2 Polish Tescos workers sacked last week in Dublin took place on Thursday evening. Around 20 people turned out to leaflet shoppers and staff at the Tesco’s store on Morning Lane in Hackney – the same store targeted by the Precarity Assembly for action on Mayday this year. read full story / add a comment

Martin Collins of the Derrybrien Development Society has been investigating the various deals done between the Public State body Coillte and the various private enterprises regarding the development of the wind-farms at Derrybrien, which led to the land-slide in 2003. The information below is taken from the website of the Office of the Information Commissioner (http://www.oic.gov.ie), in reference to an FOI request made by Martin Collins. In particular, the conduct of the parties (i.e. Coillte, Saorgus and the Dept. of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources) is heavily criticised by the Commissioner. read full story / add a comment

Eden tsubari a 19 year old soldier with the Israeli defence forces, and a native of Tapuah an israeli settlement in the west bank, went a.w.o.l. today, and still dressed in his uniform opened fired on a bus passing through Shfaram near Haifa in the palestinian territories.
