Noel Dempsey today welcomed Rio Tinto's 'donation' to the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI). This is the same Minister that yesterday granted permission for Shell, Statoil and Marathon to begin offshore work on a major gas field despite recent illegal construction work. Demspey appears to be championing the role of multinational corporations in Ireland despite the wishes and rights of Irish citizens. the Sub saharan state of Mauritania has seen events in the last 48 hours which suggest a coup d'etat in progress though latest news reports suggest an aborted coup. The president Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya is currently in Riad to attend the funeral of the Saudi King. "Islamist" military officers stationed troops on the street and shut the radio down, Mauritania doesn't really get much telly. read full story / add a comment

A 'Freetekno' Party was stopped during the weekend by a series brutal and irrational actions of the Czech Police. Around 6000 people were attacked by the riot cops while having a party. The Highway was blocked and people entering the Czech Republic were turned away at the border, discriminated against on the basis of their looks. The party was legal action with approval of the property owner. Police actions were convicted by many mainmedia journalists, inhabitans of the nearest villages, human rights organisations, politicians and even by the president of Czech Republic. read full story / add a comment
