mayo / environment / news report Thursday June 16, 2005 13:14 by JohnM
This morning (June 16th) sometime before 9am Shell workers again attempted to enter private lands in Rossport , Co. Mayo, as part of their preparation work for the Corrib upstream pipeline development (this was also attempted yesterday afternoon, details to follow later). Permission from the Corduff and McGrath families, on whose lands the Shell were attempting to work , was not given. in the face of physical intimidation. The Gardai were called to the scene, and were forced to transport Mary Corduff to seek medical attention due to the stress of the situation. The Corduffs have in the last few moments returned from the doctor in Belmullet (20 odd miles away) and the situation has yet to be resolved on the ground today. read full story / add a comment

national / indymedia ireland / feature Wednesday June 15, 2005 16:04 by Indymedia Ireland Editorial Group
Over almost 4 years of operation Indymedia Ireland have evolved a set of working practices and processes for keeping this site running and making it live up to its goals as best we can. Until now most of these operating rules have been hidden away among mountains of posts on the newswire, or even hidden inside the heads of individual editors. At our recent meeting we discussed the following documents which formalise how we work. We hope that they will make it easier for new people to get involved and understand how we work. read full story / add a comment

Here are the results of votes, that is to say the % of the electorate who were registered to vote who did so, province by province. Using this list, we can quickly & promptly identify those provinces where blue flag beaches and a kicking good mass count for more than new fangled notions on the high-tech chicken baster designer kids for infertile people market. The Pope is delighted. We can now see that the real trouble makers are concentrated in the north west and Tuscany where Mr Blair goes on holidays around Bologna and Florence. The Italians will now move progressively, to banning condoms, outlawing orgasms, herding up preverted types [sic], adopting african kids, & of course attending marches organised by the Spanish rightwing. BUT of course they won't relax, it doesn't really make much of a difference. It is now not only cool to "not vote" its HOLY. @.:.%+*$/€ read full story / add a comment

down / anti-capitalism / news report Sunday June 12, 2005 21:57 by Mark Hewitt
The text was compiled by members of the ARN Steering Committee: The Housing Executive have just been involved in one of the most despicable acts against travellers imaginable. Yesterday (Friday 10 June), in an appalling move, a court slapped ASBOs on two members of the traveller community barring them from entering Larne town. The two travellers form part of a much bigger family and social group and therefore it is a bar on a whole group of travellers. read full story / add a comment

"I believe that spies, the security services, in the world generally, are becoming increasingly powerful and that our civil liberties are being eroded." Justin Keating. This article is an attempt to put flesh on those bones. I attempt to list some of those agencies active in Ireland, to list some of the powers they can and do use to make life difficult for those that cross them and to look at some of the technology they have access to. I put in two appendices too that hopefully show the controlling role of those agencies in Irish paramilitary groups and some international comparisons to this type of intelligence agency support for 'terrorist' groups that they are ostensibly opposing. An Orwellian island in an Orwellian world! read full story / add a comment

Carcavelos beach is just outside of Lisbon the capital of Portugal, where the EU deal on good times for poor people was made. Yesterday during the national holiday, Carcavelos beach filled up with happy Lisbonites relaxing from the worst inflation in the EU, and probably rubbing shoulders with the cheery types who fly in from the north and buy flats in the picturesque city to recover from the strain of being on the pigs back. This is modern tourism. read full story / add a comment |
