Banksy, one of those names which has been recognised for years amongst the European underground artivism scene, not least because he thought to leave his name stencilled near his better work which left on the walls of Bristol, London, Barcelona and many other cities, helped us work out the name he likes for himself, and indeed be additionally inspired to explore the artistic and political potential of the stencil. read full story / add a comment

1998 was a pivotal year in European politics, it saw the governments of Ireland and the UK negotiate with armed factions on areas of joint constitutional concern. We call this the "power sharing agreement" in the ·"peace process".

1998 also saw the government of Spain under Aznar authorise contact with an armed faction to discuss areas of joint constitutional concern. We call this "one of the ETA ceasefires". read full story / add a comment

‘SURPLUS’- Film Showing Monday 23, May 8.30pm Red Parrot Dorset Street.

"Surplus is an open declaration of war on terror. We are terrorized into
being consumers" Adbusters Magazine

SURPLUS: TERRORIZED INTO BEING

SURPLUS by Swedish filmmaker Erik Gandini.
screens Monday 23rd May 8.30 pm, Red Parrot, Dorset St organised by the SWP.

SURPLUS is an intense visual odyssey filmed over three years in
eight different countries. From the explosive riot days in Genoa 2001 to $7000
sex dolls in the US, SURPLUS explores the destructive nature of consumer culture. Stunning editing and breathtaking cinematography turns the notion that 20% of the world is gobbling up 80% of its resources from pure statistics into an overwhelming emotional experience. read full story / add a comment

Condoleeza Rice (USA Secretary for State) spoke in Ireland (was it at Shannon?) about the alleged massacres being perpetrated by the US-backed regime in Uzbekistan. The USA has a large base in the country to facilitate its operations in Afghanistan and to operate as one of the bases used by the CIA in its "extraordinary renditions" program where people are flown to foreign countries so they can be tortured off US soil. The US State Department website admits that Uzbek security forces use torture and at the same time the USA has granted them approximately US$100 million in 2002 alone for "security". The White House has also released press statements insinuating that because the opposition is Islamic it must be terrorist. read full story / add a comment

Last Summer, on the 16th June 2004 was was the 100th anniversary of Ulysses, James joyces more revered work. As official celebration kicked off on O Connell st, activists working within the Dublin grassroots network took part in a some political street theatre of their own.

Deciding to highlight the abuses of state terrorism being carried out by the occupying forces of Iraq and Afganistan, that continue to this day, the activists 'hooded' up the statue of Joyce on Talbot st., dressed up in the universally identifiable clours of those held illegally in Guantánamo Bay. read full story / add a comment
