There is no clear majority, with 100% of votes counted,abstention has increased in all three provinces of the Basque Autonomous Communty. Bizkaia 31% Gipuzkoa 31.3% Araba 30.2% an average of 31% "non-voting" in contrast to 21% in the 2001 elections. read full story / add a comment

The _*unrecognised*_ Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has a presidential election today. The self-proclaimed republic was declared in 1983 in the the northern region of the island which the Turkish Army occupied back in 1974. Turkey is the world's only country to have recognized it. The Organization of the Islamic Conference (bit bigger than the arabic league but the mint tea isn't as food) granted it observer member status under the name of "Turkish Cypriot State". read full story / add a comment

500 “bombspotters”were arrested by police today after thousands gathered in Belgium to carry out a citizens nuclear weapons inspection. A massive police presence greeted inspectors from Greenpeace and Bombspotting at NATO-HQ, SHAPE and Kleine Brogel airbase. Greenpeace activists from the six NATO countries currently hosting the 480 nuclear weapons based in Europe: Italy, Germany, Belgium, UK, Turkey and the Netherlands joined the inspection team . read full story / add a comment
