Right on time for the heated phase of mobilization for April 2nd, 2005, the second European Action Day, a new film is released that focuses on international resistance against refugee camps and deportation prisons. “No Lager – Nowhere” is a European Co-production, German/English, 39 minutes, Berlin 2005. Released last week, it is a 39 minute video which brings together images from various anti-lager actions that have taken place across Europe in the past. The video contains fottage from actions both outside and inside refugee and migrant detainee camps in Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Australia, the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands. The film documents various experiences and actions from eight countries: a collection of testimonies, but mainly a patchwork of images of resistance, which should encourage and inspire to intensify and to transnationalise the struggles against the "lagerregimes". Book worms, and students of Italian here's a new titlie which might interest you. But if you're a nutter, (like the type who climbed on to the St Peter's basilica dome last saturday and asked for a lottery for orphans) you're *not to* read it. In fact none of you are to read it. Consider it as bad for your moral development as the Da Vinci Code. If you're very talented, and related to a government member, you might like to write your own Irish take on it and get a salary in addition to your tax free income. read full story / add a comment

Good Friday at Shannon saw an encounter between Airport authorities and a peace activist that resulted in the shedding of a small amount of blood, and the passing of possibly hundreds of US troops and an unknown quantity of weapons and munitions on their way to the war and occupation of Iraq. There was not confrontation between the airport or Irish authorities and the US troops, who should have been arrested and interned under the Hague Convention V on neutrality. read full story / add a comment

it has now been 5 years since Sizeism the concept entered the english language of Ireland when a The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted on Monday May 8th, 2000 to outlaw discrimination against fat people. Well, of course they didn't really say fat people because that might reek of . . . discrimination. They voted to add the words "body size" to already exciting laws banning discrimination based on "race, colour, religion, age, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, disability, place of birth or gender identity". The vote was a big victory for America's Fat Acceptance movement, which has scored similar legislative victories in Washington and Santa Cruz, California. read full story / add a comment

After a wonderful campaign line these last few weeks, which followed the introduction of an american educational idea to Ireland "rate you teacher", the penny (cent of a Euro) is finally dropping. Not only are our kids overweight, but they're as thick as bottled shite as well. But the teachers of ireland, are meeting these days at the Burlington Hotel for their annual conference to discuss how to get the parents / voters to place the blame properly. read full story / add a comment

A few weeks ago I took a walk with an Irish Setter belonging to my son who lives in Maynooth. On Holy Thursday a young Golden Retriever moseyed up to my back door and stayed for a little while. I don’t know about huskies and Dobermans - and I know that some small dogs (like some small people) can be quite vicious - but the two dogs I met were lovely. read full story / add a comment

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention (BTWC) on 26 March 1975. The BTWC was the first Convention to ban an entire class of weapons of mass destruction, and is a key component of the international non-proliferation and disarmament framework. The European Union (EU) considers the BTWC to be the cornerstone of our efforts to prevent biological agents and toxins from ever being developed and used as weapons. read full story / add a comment
