Interesting stuff in today's Sindo and elsewhere. "Anti-Fascist" youths are reported to have claimed responsibility for be-heading a statue of the IRA Chief of staff and Nazi collaborator Sean Russell in a Dublin park. A statement from the (unamed)group describes him as a fanatic who looked to Hitler for support, and suggests that the nazis expected republicans to hand over Jews in a united Ireland established with German support. Anyone know who carried out the action? AFA? read full story / add a comment

On Friday 19 November and again on Friday Dec 10th and Fri 24th Dec, FEIC carried out the digging of a symbolic grave at Raytheon, Derry. During the protest, large numbers of white ribbons and flowers were tied to the railings which run along the perimeter of the Raytheon plant. A large stone marker, with the words, 'Fallujah 2004' was left to mark the grave. Flowers and candles were left in an act of solidarity with the people of Fallujah. Within two days, every single ribbon, flower and candle had been removed. The grave marker was taken away half a dozen times and was eventually broken in two. The grave continues to be removed and descrated every time it is dug. Despite this, FEIC continue the protest. It's clear that Raytheon in Derry are unnerved by the protest and threatened by white ribbons, flowers and candles. The people who make Tomahawk Cruise m read full story / add a comment

A paper on the subject entitled “The origins of the Irish Travellers and the genetic structure of Ireland” concludes that “the Travellers are undoubtedly of Irish ancestry, due to their proximity to the centroid. Furthermore, the Travellers clustered with several heterogeneous counties in Ireland, including Wexford and Westmeath. Therefore, these data support that the origin of the Travellers was not a sudden event; rather a gradual formation of populations. Indeed, the Travellers probably originated with craftsmen and artisans forced to leave their monasteries (Crawford 1975). Later, their population grew as they were joined by various Irish groups that were forced to leave their homes because of various calamities and political upheavals (i.e. the potato famine and the repression of British occupation) (Crawford 1975). However, the timing of the Traveller origin is not certain and may have predated the historical period (e.g. Ni Shuinear 1996).” read full story / add a comment

Guerrilla’ is a Spanish word meaning ‘little war’. Small nations or revolutionary bodies can only defeat the occupying forces, who are superior in human resources and arms, as well as economic and material resources, by means of guerrilla warfare. Guerrilla warfare has been employed to overthrow colonialism, to launch civil wars, and by Communist and Western powers in the Cold War. read full story / add a comment
