Todd Gitlin, Paul Berman and assorted intellectuals of the "decent left" have earned their keep arguing that anti-imperialism is nothing but an echo chamber of nihilism, oedipal rage and tacit support for whomever the governing class declares the enemy. Once upon a time their kind derided the Communist left as window dressing for the gulag; now they argue with parallel duplicity that anti-imperialists are shills for "Islamo-fascist" death cults and suicide bombers. As the gate-keepers of acceptable dissent, that is to say "none," they rarely take time to note what it is, this America, they've declared their loyalty to and what it is exactly the "anti-Americans" oppose. read full story / add a comment

Abbeyshrule airfield has been upgraded. Runway resurfaced and military style numbers painted on both ends. Looks like there are plans to extend the runway and add bigger aircraft parking areas as part of a new development as the area is now fenced off..

Anyone know what the small white planes are that fly round? They look like US military drones of some kind? read full story / add a comment

The catastrophe in Asia has unleashed an unparalleled feeling of global solidarity. Millions of people around the world have given donations to the people and the countries in need.

This global solidarity and the willingness to help and assist have forced western imperialism to promise aid and to offer a temporary freeze on debt repayment.

While working people around the globe show genuine sympathy there are reasons to show no trust in the promises given by capitalists and political representatives of imperialism.

The Bush administration regards its aid effort as a, “Crucial weapon in a battle for the hearts and minds of Muslims in southern Asia and in much of the rest of the Muslim world, nudging their sentiments in America’s favour”, wrote the San Francisco Chronicle of January 6... read full story / add a comment

At June 2003 the summit of the EU bosses took place in Greece, at the Porto Karras Hotel next to the village of Neos Marmaras which is close by to Thessaloniki. For a week demonstrators from all over the world occupied the universities of Thessaloniki and organised marches and actions against the summit of the bosses. During the attack on the red zone (20/06/03) around the hotel where the summit was taking place, the police forces brutally repressed the protestors by using batons, rocks, chemical gases of every kind and even rubber bullets. The last day of the mobilisations (21/06/03) mass protests took place in Thessaloniki where the police attacked the protestors and injured badly many of them. Approximately 130 people were arrested and 29 of them where send to the court house. read full story / add a comment
