We have heard seductively in the past of the efficacy of "tough love." But what is toughness? Is it just cowardly bluster? Before the illegal invasion & bombing of Iraq, five members of the pacifist Catholic Worker movement made their way into Shannon Airport & non-violently disarmed a US Navy Warplane in the early hours of Feb 3rd. 2003. The Pit Stop Ploughshares, Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Karen Fallon, Damien Moran & Ciaron O'Reilly have spent 4-11 weeks in Limerick Prison & two years on bail. They go to trial at Dublin's Four Courts on March 7th. They are charged with 2 counts of criminal damage 100euro & $US2million. They face a maximum of ten years imprisonment, if convicted. Pius XII was pontiff, bishop of rome, secular head of the Roman Catholic Church, pope, head of the Holy See, and as such signed the diplomatic agreement with Mussolini ending a very long conflict over the territorial integrity of the Vatican and establishing it as a state, and as Pope did not call attention to the Shoah. Pius XII is currently being discussed for canonization by which he would be declared a Saint. read full story / add a comment

In the middle of his current visit to Tanzania, British chancellor Gordon Brown has claimed that "the days of Britain apologising for its colonial past are over". Some of us may beforgiven for wondering when we ever heard any of these apologies, but I suppose that would be unfair to the chancellor and highly cynical. Especially when one considers his follow up comment that it was time for Africans to start talking about "the enduring British traditions of liberty and tolerance". ANC leader Thabo Mbeki, for some strange unearthly reason, isnt highly impressed by the British chancellor. He claims that British imperialists have simply treated the African peoples whose lands they occupied as savages. read full story / add a comment

"Images of Resistance" photography exhibition, documenting the anti-war movements in Europe and America. The photographers are Paul Mattsson,Guy Smallman both from London and Michael Gallagher and Paula Geraghty from Dublin. The exhibition will be on from 16th - 28th February in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sean McDermott St, Dublin 1.
