DUBLIN – September 24, 2004 – The Irish Seas Nuclear Free Flotilla (ISNFF) will stage a peaceful protest on October 3 in Dublin, opposing a plutonium shipment from the U.S. that is currently bound for France and due to pass within 150 miles of Ireland’s south coast, breaching the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 200 miles. The ISNFF points out that the countries participating in this shipment - France, the U.S. and U.K. - have failed to comply with international law, and have shown a blatant disregard for the concerns of coastal nations. read full story / add a comment
clare / anti-war / imperialism / feature Sunday September 26, 2004 22:46 by Tim Hourigan
In the phony war on terror, thousands of people have been taken prisoner and tortured with no evidence, charges or trial. The arrests make good PR for Bush, the admissions of error are 'less newsworthy'. Even before we set up the peace camp at Shannon we suspected that the US Government would use Shannon airport to transport its captives to Guantanamo Bay. After a lot of digging, and some luck, we now have a lot more than suspicion, and YOU have to help us to hold the Irish govt to account for this. a watered down version of this appeared on p6 of the Sunday Business Post today... I was expecting a bit more bite.. so here's a bit more of what's being hidden. read full story / add a comment

Resolving the Traveller accommodation crisis is a matter of urgency and one of primary concern in combating discrimination. The negative public perception of Travellers is reinforced daily by the sight of families living on roadside sites with no sanitation, water, electricity, refuse disposal, or facilities to dispose of liquid waste. The local authorities collectively are the only agents of change who can help improve the position of Travellers through co-ordinated action to address the human rights problems of Travellers by resolving their most basic need of shelter. TVG makes the case to Cork County Council to take the appropriate actuion as part of its Traveller Accommodation Programme 2005 to 2008. read full story / add a comment

It’s great to see the Ulster Unionist Party recruiting in UCD – or so I thought until I realised the Union Jack bedazzled stand was actually that of Young Fine Gael! I guess they’re really taking Bruton’s comments about reaching out to England and re-joining the Commonwealth seriously! read full story / add a comment
