Big demo in Dublin today. Photos and video and reports on RTE website radio and TV, ireland.com, even the Indo. And what do we get on Indymedia? A press release from the Continuity IRA support group posted after the march saying that they are going to attend it. And reports from Shannon. No photos at all. Time to close down Indymedia. It is irrelevant and slow. If I can get better coverage of a demo on RTE and the corporate newspapers what is this place for? read full story / add a comment
national / anti-war / imperialism / press release Saturday March 20, 2004 23:14 by Ailín
"The anti-war demonstration which takes place in Dublin today (March 20), marking the first anniversary of the illegal Anglo\US invasion of Iraq, provides the Irish people with a perfect opportunity to express their complete rejection of the 26 County Administration's support for the continued illegal Anglo\US occupation of Iraq, and in particular Brian Cowen's remarks on Thursday (March 18) pledging the continued use of Shannon by US warplanes. Such remarks only serve to highlight the arrogance of an administration which has chosen to ignore the vast majority of the Irish people, who have clearly expressed their opposition to the Anglo\US invasion and occupation of Iraq, made clear by the presence of 200.000 people on the streets of Dublin in February of last year." read full story / add a comment

Report by Alois Vincenzo: With just a few hours' notice of the Wexford stop on Justin Barrett's 'Public Information Tour', I had had little time to prepare slurs or even to reacquaint myself with the politics of Ireland's most notorious far-right wannabe. I arrived at the talk venue fearing raised eyebrows at what I supposed might seem my lefty youth appearance; unshaven and bedraggled from my day's work I sauntered into the fashionable quay-side hotel foyer, to be met by the derisive chuckle of the young worker on the desk when I enquired which way to the Barrett talk. Embarassing but reassuring. read full story / add a comment

By the end of the month of June, which is for Irish readers notable as it marks the end of the Irish Presidency of the European Union, if the United Nations the agreed, legal and proper institution of international arbitration is not completely charged with the task of Iraqi reconstruction the Spanish Armed Forces will leave that country and that people. read full story / add a comment

Rosemary Nelson Reminder Today, March 15, is the fifth anniversary of the murder of human rights lawyer Rosemary Nelson. Rosemary was a good friend of the PFC and a fine and brave human rights lawyer. Her loss was felt acutely across Ireland and beyond but nowhere more so than among her immediate family. We remember Rosemary today. In the High Court this morning lawyers for the British Government announced that Judge Cory's reports into the murder of Rosemary Nelson, Pat Finucane, Robert Hamill and Billy Wright will finally be published by the end of March. (see www.serve.com/pfc for background on Cory and Rosemary Nelson) read full story / add a comment

Before coming to Ireland, I was warned not to have any romantic notions about the ‘Emerald Isle’. My Irish friend had travelled to my home country of Canada and was aware that many Canadians, especially those of Irish ancestry, have notions of Ireland that are based on commercial hype about leprechauns and beer and on the nostalgic laments of The Chieftains and the Irish Tenors about rolling hills and a glorious past. He cautioned that Ireland was changing and that the nation is manifesting the most unfortunate symptoms of economic success. I shrugged off the warning because my hopes for Ireland went much further than commercial stereotypes and, admittedly, because I really wanted to believe. After all, I endured eighteen years in a North American suburb. read full story / add a comment |
