International trade rules have a huge impact on people in the Global South. A fair trading system could lift millions of people out of poverty, and reduce many countries’ dependence on aid. A source at the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, has claimed that deposed Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, was funding armed Irish dissident republican groups in the north of Ireland as recently as June 2011. The claim featured as part of an exclusive ITV1 documentary entitled, 'Exposure: Gaddafi and the I.R.A', which aired on September 26th. read full story / add a comment

A public meeting has been called by residents and community activists who are unhappy about the household charge which will be introduced in January as part of the government’s austerity measures. The meeting, which will take place on Monday 3rd October at 7pm in Westside Community Centre is open to all and is aimed specifically at residents of Westside, Shantalla and Newcastle. The meeting is one of hundreds of similar gatherings that are taking place throughout the country. A national campaign of resistance to the household charge is being planned which will see hundreds of thousands of families boycott the new tax when it is introduced in January 2012. read full story / add a comment

IRELAND is in the grip of a "heroin epidemic", while alcohol abuse among the young is leading them towards drug use, two youth support organisations warned yesterday. The Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children were told by Spunout and the Aislinn Adolescent Addiction Centre that alcohol was both a gateway and relapse drug and that issues such as the availability of alcohol and its below-cost selling needed to be tackled as a matter of urgency. read full story / add a comment

RTE’s website carried a story yesterday about cancellations in Dublin’s transport building program . The article said that it was now “ [by] no means certain that any of the major transport projects for Dublin will be built in the next five years “. The report’s first paragraph reads: “Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said the country is in receivership and it is by no means certain that any of the major transport projects for Dublin will be built in the next five years.” The accompanying RTE News report does not include a full quote or a reference to where and when the government minister said that Ireland was “in receivership”. read full story / add a comment
