This terrace in Moore St. was the last site of resistance of the GPO garrison, Volunteers and Citizen Army, Cumann na mBan and Fianna, (about 100 people) after the evacuation of the GPO. It was therefore the last HQ of the Rising also. A number of fighters and civilians died in the street also. The site is neglected and under threat from developers. read full story / add a comment

Two policemen are under investigation for covering up a fascist brawl that involved Rome’s Mayor’s son, Manfredi Alemanno. According to Rome’s Public Prosecutors the inquiry that had followed the event was obstructed and then buried under the sand by the Police, thanks to the withholding of evidence and false statements made by policemen Roberto Macellaro (who in his free time volunteers to be the Mayor’s personal chauffeur) and Pietro Ronca, a local Chief Inspector in Rome. These two helped Manfredi Alemanno “disappear” from the scene after the beating had concluded, and then lied about what had really happened. read full story / add a comment

I know various parts of Britain are hosting gatherings to remember the dark legacy of Maggies reign but I think that in Dublin we should all come together tonight on O Connell Street to collectively remember all effected by the woman, particularly the hunger strikers, shoot to kill victims, Argentines, miners the list goes on. SO just throwing it out there and open to suggestions but this occassion should not pass with out challenging the message that Thatcher represented. Needless to say the media will be quick to have revised sanitised versions of her life being beamed over the airwaves. read full story / add a comment

CPIR Statement on the Meaning of the British Legion Poppy Once again, we have come to that time of year when we see our TV screens saturated with the blood red Poppy of the British Legion. Programmes aimed at young people, such as The X-Factor, are particularly targeted. Contestants, regardless of their origin, are forced to wear the symbol of the British Legion. And, because of the abject dependence of RTÉ on programming of British origin, Irish youths are just as subjected to this symbol as are their British contemporaries. And every year, we see, in the streets of Ireland, the results of this media saturation of young minds. More and more young Irish people think it is “cool” to wear a British Legion Poppy. So, what is the British Legion? What is it’s poppy symbol? Is it a harmless fashion statement? A benign badge of belonging to the dominant tribe, a harmless mark of British nationalism? Is it a harmless remembrance of soldiers, fallen in long past wars? read full story / add a comment

Galway S2S and Rossport Solidarity Camp members challenged the head of SEPIL, Michael Crothers, to answer for the crimes Shell has commited.
The Managing Director of Shell E&P Ireland, Michael Crothers, came to the NUI Galway Energy Night on the evening of Feb 28th. He was part of a PR delegation that promoted Shell's progress in attempting to bring the Corrib Gas Project on-stream. A group of local Galway Shelltosea activists and Rossport Solidarity Camp members with ethical objections to the Gas Project staged a peaceful protest to express their concerns. Shell has been allowed to remove 125,000 tonnes of peat bog from an area directly including, and surrounded by, EU Special Areas of Conservation. The Irish government has failed in its legal duty to protect the natural habitats upon which Shell are currently working. In relation to the negative environmental consequences of the CGP, Crother's response was to praise Shell's environmental record as "exemplary". read full story / add a comment |
