Erris was abuzz with joy and merriment as one of her finest sons, Pat 'the Chief' O'Donnell was freed from Castlerea Prison yesterday after 158 days of Shell-decreed incarceration. He was met by an ecstatic group of well-wishers outside the prison and was piped off the prison precincts after speeches by himself, Maura Harrington, and a message of support from Luke 'Ming' Flanagan, Mayor of Roscommon County Council. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday saw the launch of "Beat the Boreholes"; a campaign of mass civil disobedience to stop Shell works in Mayo this Summer. At 7am in the morning campaigners entered the water in Broadhaven Bay in kayaks and a safety rib in a peaceful attempt to prevent Shell from bringing in a second borehole drilling platform. They were met with 5 Garda water unit boats, with approximately 16 Gardaí on board and 10 security boats. Campaigners attempted to approach the platform but were prevented from doing so by Gardaí who overturned their kayaks. Gardaí arrested 2 campaigners for minor Public Order offences and seized three kayaks, the safety rib & several paddles. read full story / add a comment

Things are getting very busy here - after a peaceful June Gathering the camp is once more set to become a focal point for resisting Shell pipeline work. Shell are due in the estuary any day now to drill 80 boreholes - pipeline survey work that should take all summer. Yesterday we shut down the Shell office in Belmullet. Today Maura Harrington was jailed for non payment of fines. Niall and Pat are still in jail. Generally it seems that lots of people are wising up to the oil industry in the wake of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.... read full story / add a comment

--- Jailing comes as Shell prepare to start destructive borehole drilling ---

Maura Harrington was today jailed for non-payment of fines relating to protests against Shell's disastrous Corrib Gas project. She is currently en route to Mountjoy Prison. Mrs Harrington is now the third opponent of Shell in jail, following Pat O'Donnell and Niall Harnett. This is the fifth time Mrs Harrington has been jailed in the last 18 months, and comes as Shell have sent letters to residents of the local area, warning them of the start of drilling works in Sruwaddacon Estuary beginning 'in the coming days'.

Campaigners hung a banner reading “Energy shouldn't cost the earth” from the roof of Shell offices in Belmullet this morning at 8am. This protest connected the environmental disaster suffered by the fishermen & people of Louisiana with the threat faced by the fishermen and people of Erris. In particular the protest was in solidarity with Pat O'Donnell who has been jailed for his courageous defense of the seas and his livelihood. read full story / add a comment

The current 'Gulf Spill' is only one of scores of such disasters in recent decades. The same pattern of reckless failures; drip release of information; cover-up and collusion between operators and statutory agencies is evident throughout. Protesters are invariably vilified or criminalized so that attention may be directed away from the really criminal irresponsibility. Read the following quotes from highly credible sources and remember Pat's 100 days in jail today. read full story / add a comment

A Shell to Sea protest took place this afternoon at the 'North-West Development Forum', held in Belmullet Co Mayo. While previous protests have highlighted that the narrow terms of reference of the forum exclude real debate on the Corrib Gas Project, today’s message was one of solidarity with imprisoned campaigners Pat O’Donnell and Niall Harnett. This was the first such forum since An Bord Pleanála deemed that over half of Shell’s proposed Corrib Gas Pipeline was unacceptable on health and safety grounds in February. read full story / add a comment

On the 21st April in Ballina Circuit Court, Shell to Sea campaigner Niall Harnett was sentenced to 6 months in jail, for an assault on Garda Hugh Egan on Glengad beach. Defence barrister Leo Mulrooney summed it up, without correction from the judge, that the incident was “as close to a technical offence as possible”. Essentially Niall Harnett was found guilty of assault of a Garda for putting his hand on Garda Egan while Garda Egan was pulling out of a fellow protestor (myself), whose leg was caught on Shell’s illegally constructed fencing.
At a previous appeal sitting of the Circuit Court, Mr Harnett had been given 240 hours community service in lieu of the 6 month jail sentence, however he refused to do the community service, and so received the 6 months. read full story / add a comment

The courts have recently become a very hotly contested arena in the conflict over Shell's imposition of their unsafe project on Erris. Charges and prosecutions have been coming thick and fast over the last year and a half, but they seem to be more about persecuting campaigners than any concept of justice, and recent weeks have shown a clear bias in the policing of protest. read full story / add a comment

According to a notice issued by Eamon Ryan's Department of Transport, work is to re start shortly on the Corrib Pipeline. The notice gives a rough outline of plans to survey the estuary, but makes no mention of Shell/Garda security compounds, increased garda and navy presence, dodgy security guards with cameras, and articles in the O'Reily press saying "we need the gas".

Maybe that's a different department... read full story / add a comment
