This is a response to the SWP's reply which appeared on thier website in late August. Their material was in reply to previous Socialist Party material on the issues of left co-operation, new mass workers party and left election slates. The Socialist Party believes our reply is an accuarte assesment of the discussions that took place among groups on the left in the run in to the recent local elections and outlines our views on many of the issues facing the left. We believe there should be a left slate for the next general election and we hope our reply can assist that process. read full story / add a comment

Anyone contemplating voting No! for the first time in the upcoming Lisbon 2 referendum in Ireland really ought know the name of the candidates to be the first president of the EU. After all it's not a completely done thing that once the Irish get their answer "right", Tony Blair will sweep into the history books. The current chancillor of Germany, Angela Merckel is another leading candidate as are former prime ministers of Sweden and Luxembourg......"anyway"....... Germany is in the news globally at the moment for several reasons. First the fact that last Friday its army ordered an attack by the USAF on a fuel tanker in Afghanistan which resulted in the deaths of over 80 civilians. Second because it is running into elections. Third because its AIDS awareness people have presented a publicity image of Hitler shagging a girlie from behind with the caption "AIDS is a mass murderer". Here follows a miscellany of links in English so you can keep abreast. read full story / add a comment

It may no longer be hot off the presses, but the analysis of the recent European and local elections which appeared in the June 21st edition of the Sunday Business Post has something of the flavour of workhouse gruel about it. Unpalatable when hot, positively stomach-churning when allowed to cool and fester for seven days. read full story / add a comment

Of course news attention is overwhelmingly focussed today on the passing of the king of pop, Michael Jackson. We are even told that global internet traffic slowed whilst humanity came to terms with its loss. However, hard as it is believe and as impalatable as it may be for some to stomach, in poorer countries life has appeared to have gone as normal. General Romeo Vasquez chief of staff of the Honduran army put tanks on the streets surrounding the presidential palace where democratically elected Mr Manuel Zelaya lives and up till yesterday was mostly worrying about winning a referendum which will allow him to be re-elected and sit more terms. read full story / add a comment

The Iranian government’s campaign to mold ‘model’ Islamic citizens has not only fashioned a profound crisis of loyalty to the religious ‘ideals of the revolution’, it has nurtured action that many have silently prayed for - as the public sphere, the last bastion of the religious elites grip on power, was shot open by their own guns Sunday. read full story / add a comment

People Before Profit Alliance Councillors Joan Collins and Brid Smith Statement on election of Lord Mayor by Dublin City Councillors People Before Profit to provide real opposition on Dublin City Council Once again people in Dublin have voted for change on their City Council. In 2004 Labour was voted in as the largest group, ending Fianna Fail’s domination of the council. Instead of change, the people were treated to a game of musical chairs, with Labour entering a deal to divvy up the Mayorship and committee chairs with Fine Gael, and the sole Green and PD Councillors. When that deal broke down, Labour concluded an arrangement with Fianna Fail. The merry go round now continues with Labour in a deal for the new council with Fine Gael. read full story / add a comment

Labour Councillor Jim Mc Garry has been elected as Mayor of Sligo at the Council AGM this afternoon. The voting alliance between Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Labour which elected Cllr Mc Garry was harsly criticised at this afternoon’s meeting of Sligo Borough Council. After all the speculation, there will be no left-wing alliance on the Council, despite the fact that seven of the 12 councillors elected onto the new council are from left-wing parties. read full story / add a comment
