Approximately 400 people from various leftist groups gathered in Plac Zamkowy central Warsaw today to remember the third anniversary of the US led coalition forces invasion of Iraq on March 20th, 2003. Poland has a very pro-U.S. gvt. political playing field and initially sent 200 elite troops to partipate in the invasion. This was followed up with an additional 2,000 soldier reinforcements in August '03 to relieve beleagured occupying US forces in difficult Shia-dominated provinces in southern Iraq. read full story / add a comment

Colm and I decided to go in, drove to the car park, parked and went in to the airport. We wandered around for over an hour, sat in the observation lounge and saw three US planes, one Aer Lingus and one Ryanair, two small planes partly out of sight. Unfortunately, we had no camera. We also saw US troops passing up and down the corridor beind a glass panel opposite our window. We had a cup of tea and decided to do the protest in the middle of the Departure Lounge where there were passengers waiting and people including staff to the left, right and upstairs. Colm took out his favourite poster (with Village pic as in previous vigil in Ranelagh see http://www.indymedia.ie/article/74470) and I mine. As we stood holding the posters I started to say Ed McCurdy's poem "Last night I dreamed" and followed with an impromptu speech. Colm wore his Pitstop T-shirt. read full story / add a comment

Time to name and shame the FF senators Fianna Fáil senators have blocked attempts to set up a Seanad investigation into allegations that the US has illegally transported prisoners through Shannon airport for torture elsewhere. Apparently Fianna Fáil senators feared that the creation of a Seanad inquiry would be seen as an unfriendly act by the United States, and possibly threaten the US military's increasingly important use of Shannon International Airport. read full story / add a comment

rendition of suspects by the US is illegal under UK law, according to a leaked document given to the New Statesman. The full document is at the last link below. Some questions arise for the Irish government, civil service, Gardai and Irish army, who shamefully make us complicit in serious breaches of human rights law. read full story / add a comment

Last month's Phoenix ran an interesting story indicating that the CIA are / were also using Baldonnel to refuel the aircraft that are used for their "extraordinary renditions". In the most recent January edition, the Phoenix reports that G2 (defence forces intelligence) have been trying to discover the source of this information rather than investigate the flights themselves. Since this information is not available elsewhere online, it has been reprinted here in the public interest. read full story / add a comment

We continue to kowtow to the present incumbent of the White House using all kinds of lame excuses for so doing. Enough! October 26, 2005 Amid all the natural and political disasters it faces, the White House is certainly tireless in its effort to legalize torture. This week, Vice President Dick Cheney proposed a novel solution for the moral and legal problems raised by the use of American soldiers to abuse prisoners and the practice of turning captives over to governments willing to act as proxies in doing the torturing. Mr. Cheney wants to make it legal for the Central Intelligence Agency to do this wet work. [....] But Mr. Cheney's proposal was even more ludicrous. It would give the president the power to allow government agencies outside the Defense Department (the administration has in mind the C.I.A.) to mistreat and torture prisoners as long as that behavior was part of "counterterrorism operations conducted abroad" and they were not American citizens. That would neatly legalize the illegal prisons the C.I.A. is said to be operating around the world and read full story / add a comment |
