A CIA controlled Learjet reg no N71PG was refuelled at dawn this morning at Shannon and made a hasty exit within the hour. It had been due two hours earlier, in the hours of darkness as usual. Unlike the two other CIA planes recently refuelled at Shannon, Gulfstream N476LC refuelled on 30 Oct 07 and Gulfstream N478GS refuelled on 30 Nov 07, both of which were notorious torture rendition planes, we know very little about N71PG so far. Please carry out some research and try and dig up its CIA history. We should remember that when the now infamous N379P, known as the Guantanamo Express was first seen at Shannon and logged on indymedia by Tim Hourigan, we were not even aware of the CIA torture rendition programme. Such murky and gross violations of human rights are by their very nature very difficult to expose. read full story / add a comment

Despite an unforeseen clash with an Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) demo on the same day, the meeting attracted around 30 participants and was an interesting and informative event. Deirdre Clancy, a leading anti-war activist, chaired the first part of the meeting. Deirdre became known for her role in an action that disarmed a US war plane in Shannon in February 2003. She and four other activists were arrested, imprisoned and later tried on counts of criminal damage that could have meant up to 10 years in prison. But after two collapsed trials the five defendants were finally unanimously acquitted by a jury in 2005. read full story / add a comment

United States Ambassador to Ireland, Thomas C. Foley, gave a talk defending US foreign policy to a public meeting of the NUIG Law Society Wednesday evening. His thesis was that US foreign policy had not changed during the Bush years, but remained based on promotion of democracy and human rights world-wide, opposition to terrorism and proliferation of nuclear weapons, and stabilizing unstable regions around the world. read full story / add a comment

I went to Shannon airport at about 8.15 am this morning. Today was another “quiet” day at Shannon. There are more Ryanair flights, but far fewer other civilian flights including Aer Lingus, other long haul tourist or business flights. However, US military and CIA flights are continuing at a high level. read full story / add a comment

Afghanistan was the first target in 2001 in revenge for the 9/11 attacks on the US. Ireland offered Shannon airport to the US for this attack. The attack on Iraq had no such revenge motivation, just a grab for oil, as recently confirmed by Alan Greenspan, former US Treasury secretary. Ireland has allowed 1 million US troops pass through Shannon since March 2003. Now, Iran is the next likely target, probably within the next few months. Shannon and Irish airspace will again be used in direct and indirect support for any such attack on Iranian nuclear facilties. The fallout once again will be human lives, but this time there will also be nuclear fallout. It is long past the time for action to prevent Ireland's participation in these crimes against humanity. read full story / add a comment

Human rights are under threat. After the tragic events of 11 September 2001 in the US, human rights have come under attack in a way unimaginable a few years ago. In the new security climate, governments have undermined international human rights standards that protect people from abuse. Some use it as an excuse to persecute their political opponents. Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq while serving as a US soldier, and Ruhal Ahmed, who was taken from Afghanistan to Guantanamo Bay prison in a Hercules US military plane, for the purpose of torture, visited Shannon airport on 23 May 2007 in solidarity with local Irish peace activists. read full story / add a comment

Church of Ireland Theological College Students in Good Friday Protest At US
Embassy Students from the Church of Ireland Theological College, training for ministry in the Church of Ireland, will undertake a prayer service outside the US Embassy in Ballsbridge at 3pm on Friday 6 April 2007 (Good Friday) in protest against Extraordinary rendition and Torture by the US Authorities. The students (about 10 in all, male and female), will process from the nearby St Bartholomew’s Church, Clyde Road, behind a cross and in clerical robes to outside the Embassy where they will conduct a short service. They will also present a petition addressed to the United States Ambassador to Ireland which will call on the United States to extend procedural protections and human rights to all detainees and for an immediate end to ‘rendition flights’. read full story / add a comment

Tuesday 20th of March of next week marks the fourth anniversary of the American led invasion of Iraq. To mark this dark occasion Cosantori Siochana are holding a commemoration at the site of the old customs post on the entrance at Shannon Airport.
