This week (monday 2 - friday 6) the Barcelona International Climate Change Talks are happening, five days of formal negotiations, in the lead up to COP 15. Since Saturday there have been a series of actions in the cities streets as well as at the conference centre to raise awereness, to unite eco movements and to try to force change during this window of opportunity in the conference centre at the far side of Montjuic. But will it be enough to get us out of our AGE OF STUPID? Perhaps not, news has just come through today that African countries have abandoned the talks.

Talks Timeline
Saturday - Manifestation in Barcelona streets - The climate is not for sale
Sunday - Outdoor film screening in city streets - 11th hour - Age of Stupid - Eco hopes
Monday - TckTckTck wake up call for climate talks - Anarchist night greeting
Tuesday - Africa boycott U.N. climate talks, demands CO2 cuts read full story / add a comment

This morning An Bord Pleanala have announced that they are deferring the decision on the onshore section of the Corrib Gas pipeline. Bord Pleanala says that approximately 5.6km (or 62% of the whole onshore pipeline) is considered unacceptable because of its proximity to dwelling houses located within its hazard range should a pipeline failure occur. See the latest RTE news report on this here: http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1103/corrib.html or Irish Times report: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1103/...0.htm
More on the Bord Pleanala decision will follow later, this is a report on yesterdays People's Forum in Belmullet and Minister's Forum in Corran Buí. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday 28th October 2009 Berlanty Azzam, originally from Gaza but studying at Bethlehem University, was arrested at a military checkpoint between Bethlehem and Ramallah. She was then loaded onto an Israeli military jeep - blindfolded and handcuffed - and moved from Bethlehem to Gaza - against her will. When they arrived at the Gaza border around 11:00pm, she was released into the dark and told only, “You are in Gaza.” Berlanty was just two months away from graduating from Bethlehem University with a degree in business studies, now she is imprisoned in one of the world’s most deadly conflict zones. read full story / add a comment

Generally speaking "moaning" on the Joe Duffy show is about as far as the resistance has gone. The Joe Duffy show is the modern substitute for popular resistance.Indeed the Cowan government succeeded in demobilising mass protests that were to be mounted over six months ago. He is trying it again by engaging in current talks with the trade union leadership. Dont they just luv when Brian calls them in to talk with him. How they suck up to him.

Is suicide the irrational act of a capricious and headstrong person? Ill considered? Is it caused by an outside agency - family, an unfaithful boyfriend, a bully boss, loss of a job, bankruptcy, depression, anger, illiberal education, calumny or any other of the ills that flesh is heir to? The psychiatric services seem to find the problem of suicide impregnable and, indeed, neuroleptic medication - anti-depressants in particular - seem to be implicated in a negative way in many a suicide. Alcoholic drink is often involved if not as a cause then at least as a catalyst for suicide. read full story / add a comment

Management at Green Isle still refuse to engage with TEEU, LRC, NIB, or Labour Court. This despite the fact that they have accepted Irish State Aid to the tune of €43,000,000. Green Isle's capacity to suck money out of the Irish exchequer is matched by their contempt for workers and the Trade Union movement. read full story / add a comment

As I write thousands of people, the vast ,majority of them Irish are assembling at the largest public worship building on this island in eager expectation of a Marian apparition. The Roman Catholic church runs Knock and played a vital role in the building of the basilica, local economy, airport & marian cult.

Mary is thought by Catholics to have made her first apparition within a generation of the death of Paul and the apostles on a column perhaps more apt for a sceptic philosopher in what is now the Aragonese city of Zaragossa. Since then she has been held to appear on a roughly bicentianeal basis throughout Europe with some notable gigs in Latin America, none in Africa or Asia.

This might tell us more about the kind of people who see, expect to see or have thought they have seen her than it would indicate any particular favouritism on her part. Each time she has appeared she has been reported as bringing news for the world, after all & not just the typically poor communities. read full story / add a comment
