Christmas is an ancient feast that has many positive associations for people around the world. While the bible places the birth of Christ in Bethlehem it does not say when, but by the 4th century the Churches in the East were celebrating it on January 6 and the Churches of the West on December 25. One thing is certain about Christmas is that it is rooted in many traditions and superstitions relating to nature that existed long before Christmas and many have continued in one form or another to the present day. The many strands of Christmas can be seen in the variety of different traditions associated with, or originating in, places all over Europe. These strands are, inter alia, the solstice, the Nativity, Saturnalia, Yuletide, St Nicholas, Father Christmas, and Grandfather Frost (Ded Moroz). read full story / add a comment

A brief history of the deforestation of Ireland and why it happened.....
It is well known that Ireland has a very low level of tree cover, among the lowest of any European country – in 2012 it had risen to almost 11% although it is still way below the European average of 30%. Of course about half of this 11% is Sitkha Spruce, which is non-native and causes acidification of the soil. read full story / add a comment

Over the last week/ten days, local people in what Shell and the government like to style as the 'receiving communities' of Rossport, Glenamoy and Pullathomas (as if a dirty big refinery, a dangerous experimental pipeline and a gombeen-facilitated Gas Robbery were gifts beyond price!) joined with solidarity activists from elsewhere in Ireland to pursue a project more sustaining and sustainable than Corrib - the gradual re-afforestation of magnificent beautiful Erris with appropriate species of trees! On Monday 10 November US a US Air force executive jet, reg no 40109, a learjet 35 or a C 21A in military terminology, was being refuelled at Shannon airport, while being protected by a special garda escort. We dont yet know who the passengers were, but such luxuary transports are not for one star privates, they are normally reserved for one star generals and upwards. Some of these generals have been guilty of war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is most likely that the Gardai did not search the aircraft to ascertain if any war criminals were on board. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, a group of 15-20 Cork Harbour inhabitants, displaying a flagrant and foolhardy disregard for official warnings to stay away from the coast, braved the elements to undertake wildcat eco-restoration work at Gobby Strand, Ringaskiddy erstwhile site of Indaver’s proposed toxic waste incinerator now reclaimed as a People’s Forest. read full story / add a comment

Builders and machinery have moved in, trees and plants have been taken up and it looks like it might be the end for the Dolphins Barn Community Garden, which celebrated its first birthday on Wednesday the 12th of April. Presently the garden crew has 54 people on its mailing list and there have been at least twice that in the garden. After nearly a year of what turned out to be a really positive experiment in sustainable urban gardening, re-establishment of community, healthy use of derelict space and the creation of new friendships, things have taken a change for the worse… but it might not be the end. There is the possibility of revisiting the issue later in the year, but the gardening project has been put on hold for the moment after a number of meetings with the owners of the land where the garden is established. read full story / add a comment

On Good Friday, six vine- and figtree planters were arrested after planting an orchard at the Ericsson Microwave arms factory in Mölndal [just south of Gothenburg]. The planters came from The Church of Sweden, the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden and the Swedish Fellowship of Reconciliation. They planted a vine by the fence, then climbed over and continued the planting of figtrees and vines on a green area by one of Microwave’s buildings. At the same time as a conversation between guards and planters was initiated, the vine- and figtree planting continued. “We have read the prophet Micah’s vision that each of us should sit under his vine and his figtree, and nobody should threaten him. As Christians, we believe that the prophet’s visions are something we must begin to live here and now, and not wait passively,” says Klaus Engell. “The planting is a way to connect our Christian faith to our resistance to injustices.” Please read my translation from a Swedish report, and take a look at the photographs published on the Swedish non-violence website, ickevald.net. read full story / add a comment

As part of the greening the city eco initiave to set up more community gardens along a possible greenway (the botanic spine) and CPUL (continuous productive urban landscape) for Dublin city a community garden was set up some months back on unused land in Phibsborogh between the Royal Canal and the Arrow train line. On Saturday an open public gardening day happened during which many baby Larch and Beech trees were planted. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday saw a spontaneous convergence of diverse groups and individuals to plant trees on a site at Ringaskiddy. The aim of the planting was to assert a change of use for this land that up to now has tended to be referred to as "the proposed incinerator site". Bank Holiday Monday last myself and a friend travelled east 10 miles out of Limerick city to Glenstal Abbey. She is a friend of one of the brothers and a few days earlier over a cup of tea, he invited us out to give him a hand plant a few oak trees in some land he had cleared of conifers. read full story / add a comment
