roscommon / rights, freedoms and repression / opinion/analysis Wednesday August 21, 2013 12:54 by Paul Laverty
Are we really supposed to cut off our critical faculties and forget what the CIA has done? On the 16th of August ken loach and Paul Laverty spoke at a meeting in Effernagh, Co Leitrim, to commemmorate the 80th anniversary of the deportation of Jimmy Gralton, while across the river Shannon, the same evening, Mr John Brennan, head of the CIA attended a homecoming "Gathering" event in Kilteenan, Roscommon. read full story / add a comment

Over the past number of weeks Eoghan Harris has been uttering more than the usual amount of drivel in relation to the 1919-21 War of independence. Contemporary events have been dragged in week on week to promote the moronic view that the IRA systematically attacked Protestants during the War and after it. No notion is too ludicrous in pursuit of the deeply reactionary and frankly sectarian campaign aimed at undermining the IRA’s anti-sectarian pursuit of independence between 1919-21. read full story / add a comment

Last night I went to see ken loach/ Paul Lavety's latest effort, the film "Route Irish". I was invited along by a friend, Ben Griffin, who is an Iraq S.A.S. combat veteran. For most of my anti- war activist life the word "veteran" would conjure images of older guys from my town who had fought in WW2 in New Guinea and also recenlty returned Vietnam Veterans. I grew up sharing a back fence with the second largest military base in Australia - "Gallipoli Barracks"/ Enoggera, Brisbane, Australia. read full story / add a comment

Over 200 activists, academic and others have today called for an audit of Greek debt to determine the uses to which it was put and the legitimacy (or not) of the demands for its repayment. There are arguments for initiating a similar exercise in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Julian Assange may be imprisoned but Wikileaks is still operational, still releasing the information that Obama and Clinton do not want us to see. False rape charges have been filed against Assange in Sweden so that he might be extradited to there and then on to the US where he would likely face life imprisonment. More likely death as its very easy to arrange murder inside a federal prison. Those who have collaborated with the attempts to close down Wikileaks have learned there is a price to pay. Below is a statement from Wikileaks. This is followed by excerpts from other articles regarding Wikileaks. read full story / add a comment

At about 6pm Thursday December 16th., Julian Assange emerged from Britain's HIgh Court on the Strand, London. He had finally been released on bail after nine days in solitary confinement at Wandsworth Prison. Harsher bail conditions were added by the High Court than were imposed days earlier at the Westminister Magistrates Court. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/dec/16/julian-assa...-jail read full story / add a comment

New York, NY, May 5, 2010 – More than 50 organizations and artists from eight countries have written to legendary political singer and poet Gil Scott-Heron to thank him for his decision to drop Israel from his current tour. The letter, facilitated by Adalah-NY, highlighted the parallels between the South African Apartheid that Scott-Heron crusaded against decades ago and the Israeli system that currently subjugates Palestinians. read full story / add a comment

Now that today's expressions of solidarity for Maura in Galway have been serendiptously overtaken by Shell's announcement that "the Solitaire will leave Killybegs today for a UK Port where deep water berthing facilities are available," at the risk of wrongly second guessing her, a sweet and honourable ending to her hunger strike is, surely, in the offing.? read full story / add a comment

Several prominent politicians today called for Shell to immediately make explicit what the intent of the pipe laying ship Solitiare is. Given that Maura Harrington is entering her 10th day of hunger strike, and there are various rumours going around about the sea worthiness of the pipelaying vessel, Tony Gregory TD, Sen. David Norris, Joe Higgins, Patricia McKenna, Andy Storey (Afri) and the filmmaker ken loach all signed up to the joint statement calling for the Multinational Shell to give an unequivocal annoucement , rather than playing with the life of local campaigner Ms Harrington read full story / add a comment

The following letter has been published in the Irish Times on 9th May 2008. This is a significant development, because the Gardai and the Irish Government authorities have clearly failed to carry out their duties towards prevention of the crimes of torture at Shannon airport. This however does not relieve the citizens of Ireland of their responsibilty to prevent torture. It is the moral and legal duty of all Irish citizens to take 'all neccessary means' to prevent the possible continuing use of Shannon airport by the CIA and the US military for the purpose of transporting prisoners for torture. read full story / add a comment
international / anti-capitalism / news report Monday November 05, 2007 12:32 by Funny Girl
This document to Respect members marks the definite division of Respect and the end of Respect as it has been heretofore. Almost all the non-Socialist Workers Party members of the Respect National Council have called this Conference. It coincides with the scheduled Respect Conference which the signatories have claimed has been packed by the SWP and would be pointless to attend. Readers interested in balanced and detailed information on the crisis in Respect (the broad leftwing Unity Coalition in England and Wales) since August are referred to the 'Socialist Unity' blog. Though it looks like much can be salvaged from the old Respect, it is a shame that yet another attempt at the development of a new left appears to have fallen foul of left sectarianism. read full story / add a comment

RTÉ has announced a programme in its Hidden History series making controversial claims about IRA sectarianism during the War of independence. This is how RTE is currently publicising it: Guns and Neighbours: The Killings at Coolacrease “The bloody tale of a bitter land dispute, involving a family of Protestant farmers in County Offaly, which comes to a deadly conclusion during the War of Independence. Featuring interviews with descendants of the men who carried out the killings, this portrait of a forgotten atrocity features substantial newspaper archive research, IRA witness statements and military documents from the period.” read full story / add a comment

The most immediately striking thing about Guillermo del Toro’s latest film “El Laberinto del Fauno” (Pan’s Labyrinth) is that it is entirely in Spanish with English subtitles yet still draws large crowds in Dublin’s ordinary multi-screen cinemas. The film, a mixture of fantastic fairy-tale and dramatic account of life in post civil war Spain, follows the journey of a highly imaginative young girl called Ofelia. Ofelia’s mother has married a sadistic fascist army Captain, who is engaged in a battle with local guerrillas throughout the film, and she is forced to move to his remote outpost despite a complicated and pregnancy. read full story / add a comment
international / anti-capitalism / feature Monday October 09, 2006 15:09 by Nina López and Maggie Ronayne, Global Women’s Strike
In January of this year we were part of an eight-country Global Women’s Strike delegation to Venezuela from co-ordinating groups in England, Guyana, India, Ireland, Peru, Spain, Uganda, and US – over 70 women and men. Working with the Bolivarian revolution since 2002, our global network took advantage of Caracas hosting the World Social Forum to work together in the heart of the revolution. We wanted as many of us as possible to witness how grassroots communities, beginning with women, are spearheading a revolution and winning back their oil wealth, through an extraordinary relationship with their elected President Hugo Chávez Frías.
