Anti G8 Activities13th-15th June: Republican Sinn Fein will be holding an Alternative to the G8 Summit, an Anti-Imperialist Forum, in the Conway Mill Belfast, on June 13, 14 and 15. A number of speakers from both a Republican as well as a unionist perspective will be there as well as speakers the academic world. The Forum runs from 6pm to 9pm on Thursday June 13, from 1pm-9pm June 14 and from 10am-6pm June 15 see website for more info: http://www.irish-solidarity.net/db3/ 15th June: The BIG march for a fairer world: Civil groups such as the trade unions, ICTU, Amnesty, Friends of the earth, IPSC have organised a response to the G8. I'm putting up the full article as it requires registration to access it. Many activists are put off by this so please leave it up. It tells an important story about how land in the developing world is stolen, even by god fearing folk who made their money in private prisons. Another great article by Fred Pearce. MIGHTY MOM was angry. She was doing her washing a few miles from Lake Victoria in east Africa, soaping her clothes in the shadow of a tall chain-link fence, behind which there was a large farm. The farm was owned by an evangelical American who had made his fortune running private prisons for state governments in the US before coming to Kenya and taking a leasehold to drain the Yala swamp and grow rice in place of papyrus. read full story / add a comment

Today what is described as the Irish working class is of a different character. Much of the working class work a three day week or don’t work at all. But they and the so called low paid worker receive a basket of benefits from the capitalist welfare state that bring their living standards up to the level(and even beyond) of the higher strata workers who, prima facie, appear to be better off. But much of this strata may earn less revenue, in effect, than many of these workers from the lower strata. read full story / add a comment

Sark is a tiny island, with a population of around 600 people of the coast off the coast of Normandy which operated a feudal system of government until 2008 when it was forced to comply with the EU convention of human rights. It is held as a fief on behalf of the Queen of England and while it is a part of Britain it is not part of the UK and sets its own tax rates which is set at an extremely low rate. read full story / add a comment

Erris Inshore Fishermen's Association (EIFA) gets a dose of the crabs from Shell and were left scratching on Monday last!: Three years too late, EIFA 'fishermen', whose shillings from Shell have run out were back again on Monday on another begging spree. During this begging exercise by EIFA Shell's begging bowl ended up in the depths of the ocean off Ballyglass Pier and deep sea divers were successful in locating the bowl at co-ordinates 54-15-21 N, 09-53-49 W. read full story / add a comment

I’m not usually one for signing petitions, but a recent initiative has started up which I feel very strongly about. While the top table directly involved in organising and carrying out the butchery of the G8 in Genoa 11 years ago have happily got away with it, 10 activists are risking a total of about 100 years in jail for crimes of “devastation and looting”. As the official site of the campaign “10 x 100″ likes to point out, the crime of “devastation and looting” was first introduced in 1930, that is, while Italy was still under a Fascist regime. Funny how it’s still there. It was first applied to modern Italy as a repressive measure against football fans, but, interestingly, it has been more recently used against migrants revolting in detention centres and activist protests. Today the AGM of Mayo Co. council was disrupted by a high pitched grinding noise; a recording of the sounds that came from Shell's compound in Aghoose during the June bank holiday weekend. Local residents aimed to demonstrate how they were ignored when they tried to complain about this disturbance which lasted for four days, and were told the council offices were closed on the bank holiday. read full story / add a comment

RTE has upheld a complaint against Eoghan Harris and Gerry Gregg's short television documentary An Tost Fada ('The Long Silence') on two counts (Sunday Times, 24 June 2012 - see article below and letters back and forth to RTE). The complaint, RTE’s response and reply to RTE are attached here as separate PDF files - right-click and save them to read. At least one programme mistake resulted from suppression of information. Other very serious errors in the programme were not addressed by RTE. I have asked RTE to address them and to make a balancing programme. I have also asked RTE to bring back its abandoned policy of using a historical adviser on such programmes. read full story / add a comment

For those of us who like a drink, but don't see ourselves as the type to march around with signs when banksters and politicians rob us and lose us our jobs, but still feel a tear when the anthem is played after the footy, here's a way we can get some relief and at the same time show our disdain for the crooks that helped get us into this bind.
