Twenty five peace activists were again far outnumbered by security forces at Shannon airport at the January peace vigil.
Inside the airport three OMNI Air Troop carriers were under army and garda protection, at taxpayers expense. Garda and army personnel were not complaining of course, with their Garda overtime and army security allowances. The taxpayer may wish to question however, why Ireland is incurring such expenditure, in addition to waving many of the air navigation fees due to US military traffic over and through Ireland. This military air traffic is also breaching Irish neutrality on a daily basis. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Civilian passenger numbers are still falling at Shannon airport which is now downgraded to Ireland's third airport after Dublin and Cork. Yet, there were four US troop carrying aircraft at Shannon at 9.30 am today Sept 15, and probably several more during this 24 hour period. These four planes carry at least a total of 1,000 armed troops and perhaps up to 1,200. Today’s total of US troops through Shannon airport may even exceed 2,000 troops. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Today’s peace vigil at Shannon on 9 Jan 2011 was not a celebration but a commemoration of events that have been occurring over the past 11 years in Afghanistan and Iraq in which the United States waged unlawful and unjustified wars killing hundreds of thousands of people. It also commemorated and offered condolences on behalf of the many prisoners who were kidnapped, imprisoned without trial and in many cases tortured in Guantanamo and elsewhere. January 2011 also marks the 20th of the US led Gulf War in 1991, which led to the deaths of over two million Iraqi people in the decade up to 2001. read full story / add a comment

We urgently need a national strike, this comming week, to force the corrupt incompetent Fianna Fail/Green regime out of government. If we fail to do so we deserve some of the shame and devestation that is being heaped upon us. We need to take back our country from the shysters and liars who claim to be governing on our behalf. We need to act now or forever live in shame as the children of Ireland suffer and are forced to emigrate. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Garda Sergeant in Charge at Shannon airport asked Edward Horgan to produce evidence that the US Hercules warplane at Shannon was carrying dangerous munitions or war-criminals. When Edward Horgan attempted to go towards the airport to get such evidence he was prevented from doing so by Gardai. About 1000 US troops and an unknown quantity of munitiions passed through Shannon today In Afghanistan, some people died because of the US-led war of occupation assisted by some Irish Army soldiers read full story / add a comment ![]()

The past week has shown the extent to which Shannon airport has been deliberately run down as a civilian airport and turned into a US military airbase. I spent over two hours there each day, Wed 4th, Friday 6th and Sunday 8th. During these times, the number of aircraft tansiting the airport associated with the US military exceeded civilian passenger aircraft. Aer Lingus, Ryanair and Air France are gradually abandoning services from Shannon while its use as a military airbase is increasing. read full story / add a comment ![]()

This weekend, Shannon airport was almost deserted of civilian air traffic. However, its transformation into a WARPORT is no longer just a slogan, it comes close to reality. On Saturday the usual OMNI Air US troop-carrying planes were joined by a Hercules C130 probably transporting munitions to the US wars on Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iraq. An oil-tanker was docked at the Shannon airport Jetty delivering aviation fuel to fuel the aircraft including the warplanes. On Sunday Top-Oil oil company was refuelling another Hercules C130 in the centre of the airport. An Irish Army patrol performed security duties, instead of arresting the potential war criminals. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The monthly peace vigil at Shannon on Sunday 13 Sept took place on a beautiful Indian Summer's day when nature seemed to be at peace with itself. However, a closer look inside the airport fence showed very few civilian planes, with Aer Lingus cut backs on Shannon services, Air France/CityJet about to abandon its Shannon Paris route, and Ryanair also planning schedule cutbacks. There was plenty of military activity however, with four warplanes surrounded by Gardai and Airport Police. read full story / add a comment ![]()

A very successful peace conference was held at Shannon airport on Sat 5 Sept 09 for the purpose of highlighting the interconnections between the establishment of a US forward airbase at Shannon airport, the militarisation of Europe, the abuse of Irish neutrality and the Lisbon Treaty. The attendance of over 80 was mainly for Dublin, so it was great to get such a dedicated group of peace activists to Shannon to show them very clearly to extent to which Irish neutrality has been abandoned at Shannon airport and the extent to which Ireland is complicit in the crimes against humanity being committed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. read full story / add a comment ![]()

13 peace activists attended the monthly Shannon peace vigil on 9 Aug 09. As usual we were outnumbered by uniformed and plainclothed Gardai. Peace activists travelled from Dublin, Cork, Mullingar, Galway, Ennis and Limerick to attend. The reaction of passing motorists is increasingly encouraging and positive. Since August 9 is the aniversary of the distruction of Hiroshima in 1945 by an Atomic bomb, a war crime committed by the US airforce, on the orders of the then US President, it was considered appropriate to commemorate this event. Within the airport about 200 armed US troops were passing through the airport on an Omni Air chartered troop-transporter. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On 26 June, Amnesty Ireland issued a special report "BREAKING THE CHAIN: ENDING IRELAND'S ROLE IN RENDITION". At the launch of the report, Colm O'Gorman Amnesty Director described as "barely credible" Green Party TD Ciaran Cuffe's statement that he did not believe that Shannon airport was being used by US flights involved in extraordinary rendition. Meanwhile, business as usual at Shannon, with Omni air troop carriers, Hercules C130 warplane, and National (Murray) Air munitions plane at Shannon on 27 June 2009 read full story / add a comment ![]()

Edward Horgan Resigns from Green Party Veteran UN peacekeeper and human rights activist Dr. Edward Horgan was a prominent Green Party member until he resigned and gave his support for the EU elections to independent candidate Patricia McKenna. Mr Horgan who was a prominent member of the Greens for many years tore up his Green Party membership card during a Green Party press conference saying that the party had not only let their voters down but also members of their own party. Patricia McKenna stated; “I welcome Edward’s support, he has a great track record on highlighting human rights abuses and I am honoured that he is supporting my campaign.” read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Sunday 25 January 2009, what is probably a US Navy C-9B Skytrain logistics aircraft was photographed at Shannon airport in neutral Ireland, at about 11 am. Even though it had no obvious military markings, it was being guarded by an Irish army security patrol. The registration number it is obliged to display was incomplete. The only number it displayed was 0050. As far as we can establish its full aircraft registration number is 160050. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Monday 10 November US a US Air force executive jet, reg no 40109, a learjet 35 or a C 21A in military terminology, was being refuelled at Shannon airport, while being protected by a special garda escort. We dont yet know who the passengers were, but such luxuary transports are not for one star privates, they are normally reserved for one star generals and upwards. Some of these generals have been guilty of war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is most likely that the Gardai did not search the aircraft to ascertain if any war criminals were on board. read full story / add a comment
