The call for US army planes using Shannon airport to be inspected was strengthened today when the Council for Europe welcomed the proposal made by the Irish Human Rights Commission. In a letter to the president of the IHRC, Maurice Manning, the Council supported the need for the planes to be inspected and said that it shared the concerns over the use of Shannon by planes that may be carrying prisoners destined for illegal torture camps. Alvaro Gil-Robles, Council for Europe Human Rights Commissioner, said states had a responsibility to ensure that their territories are not used for illicit purposes. read full story / add a comment

Sligo Labour Party Councillor and former TD, Declan Bree, has ruled himself out of contesting the next General Election as a Labour candidate. Shell to Sea plan mass rally for the Rossport 5, they launched the march today outside Shell's Dublin Offices in Corrib House, on Lower Leeson Street. Clr. Declan Bree has been accused of trying to destroy the Labour Party and create division in the local organisation. The claim is made by Nicola McGarry, daughter of the controversial ex-FG councillor Jim McGarry who joined the Labour Party in 2004, who says that Clr.Bree is a man undergoing a 'midlife political crisis'. read full story / add a comment

Between November 2004 and April 2005 I in a personal capacity wrote to pharmaceutical companies in the 26 county state who manufacture what are known as atypical 'anti-psychotic' drugs in the 'treatment' of 'mental illness'. I was motivated to do this by what I believe is a failure on the part of these companies to fully inform psychiatric patients in relation to the dangers of such drugs. This article on how pharmaceutical companies play down the dangers of neuroleptic drugs appeared in two Irish newspapers. One journalist who viewed it invited a psychiatrist friend of his to comment on it.
