cork / animal rights / press release Thursday December 11, 2014 10:48 by Bernie Wright
ANIMAL ABUSE aka BLOODSPORTS WILL HAVE SURVIVED 101 YEARS in Millstreet. The annual Millstreet Hare coursing event set for 3rd/4th Jan 2015 has already caused disgruntled locals to contact ourselves and other direct action Animal rights Groups. This cruel spectacle actually takes place on a GAA pitch in a local public park. The park in the centre of the town, a favourite with locals, dog walkers, footballers etc however is disrupted for four weeks a year and actually has a rusty dump of an enclosure permanently in place to hold the netted hares for the coursing two day event. All this is allowed in a public park such is the power of the Town Park Committee. The opposition to ending this has prompted people to release the hares on many occasions but sadly they get recaptured and coursed, it fails as too many obstacles stop their escape and they are enclosed behind more wire than can be dismantled, until maybe this year if locals do not give up. read full story / add a comment
derry / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Tuesday January 27, 2009 14:47 by Shane OCURRY
Before Christmas we were told of yet another delay to the publication of the findings of the Saville Inquiry. It is now unlikely to report until late autumn 09, more than 37 years after the events it inquires into. Certainly for family members of the murdered, many who have since died, and those of the wounded who are no longer with us justice delayed has been justice denied. However this delay in justice resonates beyond the case itself which is why Martin Luther King could say 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere'. 37 year's ago Lord Widgery's Inquiry took the side of injustice. His report retrospectively legitimised the military repression of the civil rights movement. To him justice wasn't a human ideal he had a duty to strive towards but merely a political consideration of the vested interests he represented. So the ideal was hollowed out to become another tool of oppression. read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Release March 3, 2006 Contact: John Carmody 087-6275579 Limerick — Confined to a cage with her nude body painted like a tiger and a banner above her reading, "Wild Animals Don’t Belong Behind Bars," a woman will protest the use of exotic animals by Duffy’s Circus. The protest will highlight the dangers that animal acts pose to humans and animals alike: Date: Friday, March, 3 Time: 12 noon sharp Place: Start of Cruises Street (Opposite HMV Music Store) Recently animal protection group Animal Defenders International revealed for the first time ever their findings of an undercover investigation into several Irish circuses in Ireland including Duffy’s Circus. The campaign report on Ireland's circuses is based on undercover investigations by ADI Field Officers into seven circuses touring Ireland in 2000 and 2003. ADI Field Officers obtained employment with two Irish circuses, and observed many more. Examples of the violence used to control the animals were captured in the Irish launch video: * a camel slapped in the face and then hit in the face with a broom and finally jabbed with a broom handle * an elephant kicked in the leg and then punched in the face * a hippo whipped to hurry it along when it was already walking in the desired direction * a keeper whipping an elephant in order to get her to move * a baby camel being roughly handled to force him to move * a pregnant camel performing just days before giving birth read full story / add a comment

dublin / summit mobilisations / press release Sunday May 02, 2004 14:25 by Media Group
Last night’s “Bring the Noise” march to Farmleigh demonstrated two things. Firstly, many people really do care about the freedom of assembly and opinion and for a different kind of Europe. After a month of hate speech from the security forces and sections of the media, after riot police had been placed at our assembly point with instructions to prevent people demonstrating, after our friends had been arrested, harassed on the street, our venues raided by the police, it was not an easy choice to walk, with only our own bodies, between lines of police knowing that off in the wings were the riot squads, the army and all the other threats they have used against us. read full story / add a comment
