A Judicial Review brought by Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE) alleges that the chief Executive of Fingal County Council failed to provide satisfactory explanatory reasons for granting the extension to the original decision to allow a third runway at Dublin Airport. FIE alleges that the record shows that the chief Executive was fully aware that the extra runway would result in increased greenhouse gas emissions, in contravention of the objectives of the 2015 Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act read full story / add a comment

Community resolve forces Orange retreat 06/06/13 Plans by the Orange Order to hold a controversial “prayer meeting” in a public park surrounded by nationalist homes in Portadown have been abandoned following a successful campaign by the local community. The park is located between the nationalist Obins Street and Garvaghy Road areas of the town from which Orange marches have been prohibited entering for many years. Orange marches through Obins Street have been banned since 1986 and, in 1998, marches were also banned from the Garvaghy Road. Those marches led to virtual curfews being placed on the local community, resulted in widespread resistance, and ultimately led to the murders of at least twelve people by unionist paramilitaries. In May, the unionist-dominated Craigavon Council granted permission for the Orange Order to hold a “prayer meeting” which was due to take place this Saturday evening (June 8th). Nationalists were only too aware of how the Orange Order abused a church service at Drumcree to wreak violence against the minority community in Portadown. read full story / add a comment

Given the events in Tunisia and Egypt the campaign in support of Iranian political prisoners has taken on a new urgency. So has the campaign for democracy in Iran. Iranians are just as entitled to freely choose their own leaders as Egyptians and Tunisians. Any change must come from within Iran and from below. John McDonnell MP will launch a new campaign at the Hands Off the People of Iran (GB) annual conference this coming Saturday (February 12). The 'Free Panahi! Free all political prisoners!' initiative is expected to pick up significant international support. Renowned film director Jafar Panahi has had a savage six-year jail sentence imposed on him, plus a 20-year ban on making films and travelling abroad, for the 'crime' of planning to make a film about the mass movement for democracy that spilled onto the streets of major Iranian cities in 2009. read full story / add a comment

The District Court of Wiener Neustadt extended the remand in custody of the ten animal protectionists for a further two months today. Even after inspection of the numerous computers and photos that have been confiscated, not one single substantiating charge has been added and many of the existing charges that made the strong impression of having been fabricated have already been dropped by the chief Public Prosecutor. Nevertheless, the authorities insist on further remanding the animal protectionists in custody. read full story / add a comment |
