Labour Youth calls for Nationalisation of Corrib Gas In advance of a national shell to Sea demonstration taking place on Saturday Labour Youth has called for the government to nationalise the Corrib Gas. The demonstration begins at 2pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square and a large turnout of Labour Youth activists is expected. read full story / add a comment

Saturday 3rd March will see anarchists from Ireland, Britain and Poland meeting up for planning and socialisng at the 2nd Dublin anarchist bookfair in the Teachers club, 36 Parnell square. Taking part in the discussiosn will be dissident republicans, shell to Sea campaigners and anti-war activists. We cry out for a church that speaks without fear of consequences, including loss of revenues. We understand that we live in a time of great fear and peril. We need to remind ourselves that we are not to fear those that can kill the body, but instead to fear those that can kill the soul. Our domestic and foreign policies have left us a nation without a soul. This Catholic Worker initiative flows from last December's "Witness Against Torture" walk through Cuba to Guantanamo Bay, nonviolent direct actions at U.S. Mission to the U.N. (NYC) and White House (DC) and a gathering gof 350 Catholic Workers from 55 communities in North America and Europe (Oct, Iowa, USA). Catholic Workers will hold vigil at their local Cathedrals Sunday Dec 10 (Human Rights Day) and then converge on Washingotn DC for nonviolent direct action on Jan. 11th (5th anniversary of opening of Guantanamo military prison). read full story / add a comment

RTE breach their opinion poll guidelines and fail to publish a key poll finding shell to Sea deplores the selective and biased account in today’s Irish Independent of the RedC opinion poll. There is an inaccurate and disgraceful manipulation of the opinion poll findings. This represents a new low in media misrepresentation of the issues. It appears that RTE has breached its own guidelines on conducting opinion polls. Particular care must be taken when joint polls with other organisations are planned. If for example the costs of a poll are shared with a newspaper, programme makers must be aware that the same constraints of impartiality do not apply to newspapers as apply to RT and that the high-lighting of particular data in the newspapers may reflect on the impartiality of RTE … Programme-makers must be wary of the possibility of data from polling and its interpretation being used in a partisan or propagandist way (RTE Guidelines) read full story / add a comment

Last friday's events in Rossport were a clear example of the brutality of the state; non-violent protesters were viciously assaulted with fists, boots and batons. It is important to remember however, that these events are part of the same logic that saw five men imprisoned for 92 days last year for refusing to allow shell to construct a dangerous pipeline through their land. read full story / add a comment

A large crowd of Ogra Shinn Fein activists organised and took part in a direct action at the Statoil service station in Newcastle this lunch-time (Thursday), closing the station for buisness for an hour. The protest was attended by activists from the Socialist Party and shell to Sea.OSF spokesperson Caitlin Ni Ruanaidh said of the action, "We mounted a picket today to express our solidarity with the beleaguered community in Rossport, and to raise awareness of the theft of our natural resources." read full story / add a comment

The shell to Sea campaign condemns the ongoing co-ordinated campaign to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to shell’s project in Mayo. On last Friday, Gardai employed excessive violence against peaceful deminstrators causing scores of injuries and a number of hospitalisations. Government Ministers and the leader of Fine Gael have deliberately sought to create the impression that the campaign is orchestrated by sinister ‘outside’ forces. Over the last two weeks the shell to Sea campaign has been subjected to a coordinated assault designed to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to shell’s project in Mayo. On the one hand, a large force of Gardai has been deployed to facilitate shell’s resumption of work. Garda policing of local protests has become increasingly aggressive and is adding to tensions on the ground. Numerous incidents have been logged by monitors and will be pursued in due course. On the other hand, a concerted campaign has been waged by some sections of the media alleging that our campaign is centred on intimidation and effectively run by subversive elements. read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin Natural Resources spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has called on people to support solidarity protests against shell facilities across Ireland in the wake of further clashes and reports of assaults by Gardaí on protestors at the Bellanaboy site. In a strongly worded statement, Deputy Ferris accused shell of reliance on ‘dodgy polling, brute force and scab labour’ as proof of how isolated their position is and said the company is prepared to ‘lie, cheat and intimidate’ to get its way. read full story / add a comment

A public meeting will be held in response to the latest allocation of exploration licenses in the Donegal, Slyne and Erris Basins. Donegal citizens are angry that licenses for their offshore natural resources have been given to multinational companies without any consultation and with very little benefit for the County. This is a call out from shell to Sea in Rossport. It is expected that shell, with assistence from the cops, will attempt to forcibly start work in the next few days. 100-200 cops are reported to have been drafted into the area for up to one month. If you can, please get here as soon as possible. Accommadtion will be provided.
