The visit of the head of the British Colonial police in Ireland to Cork tomorrow (September 28) is part of the ongoing process of normalising British rule in Ireland. By bringing Hugh Orde to Cork, like his visit to Ballymurphy in Belfast and Crossmaglen in Co Armagh, an attempt is being made to suggest that British rule and its forces of occupation are now normal and acceptable. read full story / add a comment

This important conference provides activists of all hues with a chance to reflect on the sources of violence in our culture. It aims to combine contributions from exciting and innovative theorists with the lived experience of grassroots resisters.

Periods of reflection and sharing of experience and theory are often underestimated as a source of strength and wisdom, particularly in anti-war activism. I would therefore urge anyone who feels they have something to say about resistance to mainstream cultural imperatives that ask us to tolerate violence to think about contributing to this conference. If you do not feel able to do so, please think about attending and participating more informally. The information is below.

The Institute for Feminism and Religion is a not-for-profit organisation. This is a non-commercial event; the conference fee is purely to cover the costs of running it. read full story / add a comment

The revelation that none of the Poles seeking enlistment in the RUC were successful in their applications gives them the opportunity to reconsider allowing themselves to become involved with the British Forces of Occupation. The Polish people have a proud tradition of opposing collaboration within their own borders, and so too should they oppose it here in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Any visit to Ireland by Elizabeth Windsor is unacceptable and deeply offensive whilst her government and Armed Forces maintain England's Occupation of six Irish counties. Relations between Ireland and England can never be normal whilst such a crime continues to be perpetrated against this country and her people. Comments made in Lisburn by the 26-County Head of State are clearly designed to pave the way for such a visit. read full story / add a comment

A massive prehistoric ‘henge’ site has been discovered in Lismullen, beside the Hill of Tara on the route of the planned M3 Motorway. The circular enclosure is the size of more than three football fields, and is without doubt a national monument because of the rarity of henges in Ireland, as well as its importance to the Hill of Tara archaeological complex.
Featuring a press conference given by TaraWatch, the video (see link below) gives details of the M3 Motorway, what lies in its path, what has been destroyed, and what is being now being threatened with destruction.

Tony Blair stated that today's events at Stormont should represent an end to a dispute between "two warring traditions", and was subsequently described by Bertie Ahern as "a true friend of Ireland. True Republicans were only ever at war with England, and whilst she continues to maintain her Occupation of this country further conflict is inevitable. Those who have sought to ensure the continuation of English rule in Ireland are only ensuring continuing warfare between these countries, and cannot plausibly be described as our friends. read full story / add a comment
international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Saturday May 05, 2007 19:16 by Dorothy Gale
Green Party candidate for Dublin Central Patricia McKenna said that
Ireland had an opportunity to play a leadership role in the fight against
the continuing scandal of hunger in the world. She said it was a disgrace
that the world's poorest had to wait until 2015 for the Irish government
to meet its UN commitment on overseas aid.

McKenna said: "Ireland's history of famine in the 19th century, coupled
with our more recent experiences of poverty and emigration, give us
legitimacy in providing leadership on foreign aid. But Fianna Fail and the
PDs have proven themselves unable to provide that leadership. The last two
governments have shamefully reneged on their aid commitments."

McKenna was commenting as the government announced today that it will
recognise and fund a commemoration of Ireland's Great Famine.

"The drafting of the text of the Berlin declaration was a case of backroom diplomacy, without any civil society participation. This does not allow for a convincing democratic argument in favour of the statement and it logically follows that the declaration completely ignores the fact that millions of people in the EU are living in poverty, coping with unemployment and social exclusion" Gabi Zimmer (GUE/NGL Germany) said in today's European Parliament debate with Chancellor Merkel on the issue. read full story / add a comment
