As an exercise in representative government the current General Election campaign is a shambles. Instead of a debate about the future direction of government we have the second round of a controversy that should never have had a first round. If Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had any questions to answer about his personal financial arrangements fifteen years ago, the place for him to do so was and is before the Mahon Tribunal. Various survivors of the Bhopal Gas Leak and activist supporters, about 150 individuals, are embarking on a month long padayatra [protest march on foot] from Bhopal to Delhi, which is a distance of approx. 800km. They are setting out from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal on 20th February and hope to reach New Delhi by the end of March. They will stop along the way in various other areas/communities that have been affected negatively by industrial pollution to share stories and establish connections. They will be walking 25-35 kilometers per day. When they arrive in Delhi there will be a big day of support and final walk to the Prime Minister's Office with various other groups from Delhi joining for the last leg to make their support for the demands of the campaigners clear. read full story / add a comment

The Ambush 2004 campaign today released details of their calls for protests against Bush’s visit to Shannon. These protests will include local protests the week before Bush arrives, a critical mass 'bikes against bush' tour across the country and two protests in Shannon and Bunratty while Bush is in Ireland.
