FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Two of the Pitstop Ploughshares, sensationally acquitted by a Dublin jury, will discuss their campaign to "demilitarise" Shannon Airport at a public meeting in Dublin city centre on Thursday evening. Deirdre Clancy and Ciaron O'Reilly, along with three others, were found not guilty of criminal damage in a unanimous verdict six weeks ago, despite their proud admission that they "disarmed" a US Navy jet in February 2003. This is their first public meeting in Dublin since that trial. Shortly after the trial O'Reilly said the group's next step would be to demand that the Government remove the US military from Shannon – or he and other activists would take "non-violent direct action" to close the airport. read full story / add a comment

Six Iranian men have been on hunger strike in front of the Danish Parliament building since 19 June. The men have demanded of the Danish Government and refugee authorities that no more Iranians be deported back to their homeland. They also want a review of the cases of asylum-seekers who have been refused refugee status. Four Iranian women are also endorsing the protest. The women cannot go on hunger strike or otherwise protest in front of the parliament building, as they have to stay in the notorious Sandholm refugee camp to take care of their children, who are said to suffer greatly under deplorable conditions, in close confinement with adults. Please read the press release, issued on behalf of the hunger strikers by Danish supporters, below. read full story / add a comment

national / racism & migration related issues / press release Monday May 15, 2006 18:15 by Irish Anti War Movement
The Irish Anti War Movement supports the asylum claims of the Afghan hunger strikers in St Patrick’s Cathedral. The desperate measure by the 36 asylum seekers highlights the lies and the myth that the US and its allies are spreading democracy through its ‘war on terror’. The reality is that the US has replaced one group of thugs that it helped to create and fund – the Taliban, with another group that it now funds – the Northern Alliance (NA), to rule Afghanistan. The real agenda behind the US ‘war on terror’ is the extension of US power and dominance in the world. The Irish Anti War Movement calls on the Irish government to approve their asylum claims in recognition of the continued oppression and absence of democracy that exists in Afghanistan. read full story / add a comment

international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Monday February 20, 2006 17:02 by Houzan Mahmoud
The recent controversy over some caricatures of Mohammed gave the Islamists an opportunity to wage a hysterical protest internationally. In many cases, this took a violent form and was clearly aimed at silencing those who dared to even portray Mohammed. In these demonstrations - across the world and in London, the very heart of Europe - many of the banners on show were emblazoned with shameful slogans. These included - “Those who insult Islam must be beheaded” and “Freedom go to hell” plus various other fatwa’s and threats against cartoonists and others who have the temerity to “insult” Islam. This is not the first time these forces have attacked people’s rights in the Middle East and Europe. Many writers, singers, even barbers and doctors have been targeted in the last 30 years let alone the enslavement of women in the Middle East under the pretext of the defence of the ‘honour’ of Islam. The furore over these caricatures is simply an excuse to stage another worldwide campaign to attack the right of freedom of expression. They want to turn Europe into yet another battlefield for their foul ideas. read full story / add a comment
