Hands Off the People of iran has been campaigning for the release of the internationally know Iranian filmmaker, Jafar Panahi, arrested by the Islamic regime on March 1 Over a month since his arrest, Panahi, whose most famous films are the widely acclaimed The circle (winner of the Golden Lion prize at the Vienna film festival in 2000) and Offside, has still not been charged with any crime. Twice offered bail during that time, he has refused out of solidarity with all those incarcerated for their participation in the mass demonstrations against the regime that have shaken iran since June 2009. read full story / add a comment

Amnesty International today criticised iran for rejecting important recommendations by the United Nations to improve human rights in the country. Behnoud Shojaee and Akram Mahdavi are scheduled to be executed in Evin prison this Sunday October 11 which falls one day after the International Day Against Execution. Some reports say that they may be executed tomorrow. Another juvenile,Safar Angooti is scheduled to be executed on October 21st. The Supreme Court is also deciding the fate of another minor on death row, Ali Mahin Torabi. This sad news is worrying the families of these youngsters, NGO's and human rights activists internationally. read full story / add a comment

Sheida Jahanbin, a former member of the Freedom and Equality Seeking Students in iran, is facing deportation from the Netherlands where she resides in exile. Sheida is twenty seven years old. She was a student of Architecture and Graphic Design at the Azad University of Tehran before she was forced to abandon her studies and flee iran following her arrest for holding a left-wing meeting. If Sheida is deported, she will face arrest, prison, torture and even death. read full story / add a comment

The following call was issued by a group of ex-political prisoners and the families of those political prisoners executed by the Islamic Republic of iran. The New York demonstrations are to be held on Wednesday 23 September and Thursday 24 September at 10 am, at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, First Ave. & 47th Street, Manhattan. Demonstrators arrested in the recent uprisings, particularly those in Kahrizak Prison have been gang-raped and the prison guards have put them under medieval tortures. Many of the detainees, female or male, have died in rape rooms as a result of being repeatedly raped, due to rupture of uterus or rectum and intestinal bleeding. Still others, in or out of prison, are suffering from the resulting physical and psychological traumas of these acts of violence. We know that the torture and raping of prisoners are not confined to Kahrizak and to the recent events. Executions and murder of prisoners, rape and torture in the Islamic regime’s prisons are as old the regime itself. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday August 1, Hands Off the People of iran will be playing a fundraising cricket match against the Labour Representation Committee. The team captains, John McDonnell MP (LRC) and Attila the Stockbroker (HOPI), will be tossing a coin at 11 am, and the first ball will be bowled at noon. Even the weather should not be able to get in our way, as we will have numerous gazebos with a fully-stocked bar and food. You dont have to be in London to support this event. Amnesty International fears the wave of arrests of civil society activists in iran is intensifying after the leading lawyer and women's human rights activist Shadi Sadr was violently arrested in Tehran this morning on her way to Friday prayers. Shadi Sadr was walking with a group of women's rights activists along a busy road when unidentified plain-clothed men pulled her into a car. She lost her headscarf and coat in the ensuing struggle but managed briefly to escape. She was quickly recaptured and beaten with batons before being taken away in the car to an unknown location. read full story / add a comment

Workers from across London will be giving up their lunch hour today (Friday) to attend a protest outside the Iranian Embassy against its Government's harsh treatment of trade unionists, something which is feared will get even worse in the wake of the current street demonstrations. Long before the current crackdown against Iranians disputing the recent presidential election result, the Government had been harassing and intimidating trade unionists. In iran members of independent trade unions are frequently beaten up or thrown into prison. And there are concerns that attacks on trade unionists will increase as protesters look for other ways of demonstrating against the regime by taking part in strikes and other work-related protests read full story / add a comment

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for the international community to act to protect journalists reporting from iran where the regime has turned its fire on local and foreign media accusing them of stirring up trouble in the wake of disputed elections. "There are two issues we are concerned about," said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary . "The physical safety of our colleagues and the threat to democracy if the government succeeds in using the media blackout and intimidation of journalists to control the information space." read full story / add a comment

Today we are witnessing the ordinary people of iran finally having had enough with the Ayatollahs and the Guardian Council. It is our duty if we value freedom and democracy to support them. I call on all who support and sympathise with them to make their voice heard and protest at the Iranian Embassy all this weekend. On May Day, workers and their families who had gathered at Tehran’s Laleh Park, following a call by the May Day Organising Committee (made up of iran’s independent labour organisations), to voice their demands and to commemorate this day, were attacked by the police and security forces and plain clothes officers. A number of people who were in the park were also attacked. Using various brutal means and instruments, the security forces seriously injured a large number of people and arrested and put in jail over 150. The International Campaign for Human Rights in iran called for the release of all labor activists and six members of the One Million Signatures Campaign still in detention after their violent arrest on 1 May as they gathered to peacefully celebrate the International Workers’ Day, and called on the International Labor Organization (ILO) to condemn the arrests.

Delara Darabi, who was charged at the age of 17 with murder, was executed today in Rasht. Darabi was 22 years old. Authorities did not inform her lawyer, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, that her execution was being carried out. According to Iranian law, lawyers must be given 48 hours notice of impending executions. “The execution of Delara Darabi is an affront to human rights values and is in bold violation of iran’s obligations with respect to international rights standards and covenants,” said Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for the Campaign. “What is more, her rights were trampled in an unfair trial.” read full story / add a comment |
