donegal / miscellaneous / press release Monday September 27, 2010 10:48 by Journey in Wonder (volunteer)
A new book by Donegal community worker Keith Corcoran promises to offer important insights into a rapidly changing world and provide an entertaining read into the bargain. ‘Journey in Wonder’ is an account of Keith adventures through 2006 and 2007 when he travelled through North America and Asia. Keith explains how he came to write the book. “While I was away on my travels I used to send back a group email every few weeks to let friends and family know I was still alive and to share some of my experiences. Then one day while I was in India, an email arrived from my sister Donna to say that a Donegal paper had begun publishing my travelogues, which was a big surprise at the time! That gave me the idea to start writing a complete account of my travels when I returned home and the book ‘Journey in Wonder’ began to take form.” read full story / add a comment

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the findings of the UN Human Rights Council investigation into Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and called for the Irish Government to take action to sanction Israel over its illegal raid. The report found that Israel’s siege of Gaza is illegal and therefore the assault on the flotilla, which left nine people dead, was also illegal. Its findings also made clear that Israeli forces had unlawfully executed at least six people at sea, and used “extreme” and “unnecessary” violence against people – including Irish nationals - both at sea and in captivity. read full story / add a comment

international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Thursday August 12, 2010 00:27 by Anthony Ravlich
Because of human rights omission New Zealand has suffered major social problems, some social statistics worse than other countries, at the bottom of the social scale but it is hidden from mainstream New Zealanders. Fear is pervasive and there is a sense of hoelessness which is holding back progress and adaptation to global changes. A focus on the truth rather than power politics and the 'money grab' will help overcome this. It has, in my opinion, modeled itself on the British class system permitting mass social class discrimination. read full story / add a comment
mayo / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Wednesday August 11, 2010 15:52 by Shell to Sea
Yesterday morning forty people from around Sruwaddacon Estuary brought Shell’s survey work in the area to a complete standstill. The community walked out onto the mudflats at low tide to assert their cockle-picking rights and disrupt Shell’s borehole drilling survey. At around 11.30am people converged at Aughoose and walked down a public right of way onto the mudflats. The group walked to one of the two jack-up barges and prevented drilling by walking underneath the platform. IRMS - Shell’s private security firm – tried to block their free passage but the people prevailed and walked where they pleased. Three people scaled the legs of the barge and occupied them for about four hours. One person chained himself to the one of the drill-shafts in order to stop the work. read full story / add a comment

international / eu / press release Friday June 25, 2010 18:09 by Michael O'Callaghan
50 Irish farming, food and environmental organisations and businesses sent a letter yesterday (24 June) to the Irish Agriculture Minister, Brendan Smith, asking him to block the European Commission’s latest move to force the approval of more GM crops for cultivation at EU level. Michael O’Callaghan of the GM-free Ireland Network said failure to do so will make it impossible for the Irish Government to implement its policy to ban field trials and cultivation of GM crops in the Republic, and also weaken the credibility of the Government’s proposed voluntary GM-free label that would provide Irish farmers and food producers with a competitive advantage in the global export markets. read full story / add a comment

Campaigners for St Luke's Cancer Hospital in Rathgar thought that the decision not to make it the southside Centre of Excellence in 2005 which meant closure and a move to St James Hospital had been indefinitely suspended due to the local and national opposition. But no, Minister Harney who always knows best ,has a Bill before the Dail at the moment with the innocent title health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010 which will dissolve the board of St Luke's and transfer the valuable 18 acre site and the other assets to the dysfunctional HSE who might well sell the land at a bargain price to balance their books. Anyone who cares about this great hospital needs to get onto TDs immediately especially John Gormley and Chris Andrews. read full story / add a comment |
