Press Release. Re National Coursing Final 2018 Our group co-organised the large demonstration against Live Hare Coursing at the Powerstown Park Coursing Disgrace. A quieter than usual and less well attended event. RTE did not even give much coverage, thankfully it’s a dying pastime which for us is the equivalent to child abuse. Our biggest question was- why was a convicted man on charges of blooding gentle hares [to train his dogs} allowed participate? He was Ger Mc Kenna’s son Owen Mc Kenna who was filmed at a Tipperary track some years ago. Journalist Donal McIntyre secretly filmed McKenna and others clearly blooding the dogs, for a BBC documentary on the greyhound industry. A court case ensued and Judge Michael Patwell sentenced Owen McKenna and a number of other defendants to prison terms. Please see link (below) to footage of the blooding session (part of the documentary entitled “On the Line”) in which you will see Mr. McKenna calmly inflict pain and suffering on the captive rabbits. The ICC should now be asked to explain its position…how can it possibly stand over McKenna’s involvement in the National Coursing Meeting if, as it claims, it does not blooding. read full story / add a comment

The spotlight among animal lovers will on the plight of the hares for the next three days (Saturday February 10th, 11th, and 12th) in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, but spare a thought for the greyhounds. Last Saturday the Irish Council Against Bloodsports captured another shocking piece of video footage exposing cruelty in hare coursing...this time at the Ardpatrick and Kilfinane coursing fixture held in County Limerick. At great risk to herself (there's a strict ban on "authorised photography" at coursing events, enforced with threats and sometimes physical assault), Aideen Yourell of ICABS managed to record part of the fixture. read full story / add a comment

A few months after the defeat of Bill to ban hare coursing in Ireland’s parliament, an extraordinary statement from the Greyhound Owners and Breeders Federation (IGOBF) has come to light. The IGBOF is the main body representing those involved in greyhound racing and hare coursing in Ireland. The statement claims that Ireland's greyhound industry is a "failure", with rising debts and plummeting attendance and sponsorship - and that the decline looks set to continue. read full story / add a comment

The European Citizens’ Initiative "Stop TTIP" has reached a new record number of signatures a few days ahead of a critical vote on TTIP in the European Parliament. With 2 million signatories, this is the largest European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) since the introduction of the instrument in 2012. In order for an ECI to be successful, half this number would suffice. Moreover, Stop TTIP has collected the required minimum number of signatures in 14 EU Member States, double the amount needed to receive an official response from the European Commission and a hearing in the European Parliament. read full story / add a comment

HUNT RUN AMOK IN OILGATE VILLAGE PRESS RELEASE. WEXFORD HUNT RUNS AMOK IN OILGATE VILLAGE. Last Wednesday at 3pm as kids were being collected from the local National school in Oilgate ,Co Wexford locals were confronted by a dead fox being left outside the school gate and blocked roads and congestion . This melee was caused by the local Ballinagore hunt according to Gardai reports. Also the local church Parish priest has advised the hunt that they were not allowed trespass on church property but they ignored the rule and rode in anyway. Locals have told us the hunt blocked up the bottle bank area, parked at houses where school parents were collecting kids and the DEAD FOX left outside the school upset children and parents. read full story / add a comment

A review of the Irish Greyhound Racing Industry by Indecon has said it believed that a “more severe system of sanctions” was needed to prevent animal cruelty in Racing. We in AFAR however feel that this statement is naive and is based solely on improving the Industry image to raise revenue. What is obviously excluded from the report is the DEATH RATE of ex-racing Greyhounds that is conveniently overlooked. The suffering of ‘raced’ dogs is immeasurable and has only been documented due to the reports of people rescuing these unfortunate animals. Greyhounds have been butchered, drugged, abandoned, vivisected on in our collages,shot and mutilated when their money making days are over. Pits have been uncovered with buried dogs and a slaughterhouse using Bolt-guns to legally kill these dogs was also exposed. read full story / add a comment

SATURDAY at 5pm. The AOHS have just received information from a Waterford train employee that a pack of hounds hunting across the train tracks have been apparently mowed down by the 2.50 Waterford to Dublin train. We are currently seeking conclusive proof about this incident!!!!-we now have some more on this. It happened apparently in the area of Mullinavat and the train accident happened at approximately 3.20 pm this afternoon at Mulinavat. As it is Saturday we presume it was the Kilkenny foxhounds hunt, who hunt every Saturday at 11am. This has yet to be confirmed.They would normally meet at 11 am. However we know that a hunt met today at the Rising Sun Pub as the pub staff have just confirmed. They however know nothing of the accident. The Revolutionary Socialists did not defend the regime of Mohamed Mursi and the Muslim Brotherhood for a single day. We were always in the front ranks of the opposition to that criminal, failed regime which betrayed the goals of the Egyptian Revolution. It even protected the pillars of the Mubarak regime and its security apparatus, armed forces and corrupt businessmen. We strongly participated in the revolutionary wave of 30 June. On February 23rd and 24th, members of an anti blood sports campaign group attended part of the so-called “Irish Cup” live hare coursing event, which was held on Limerick racecourse and sponsored by multi millionaire businessman JP McManus. Good news from Northern Ireland . AFAR is delighted in The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) stance in updating the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 to ban any dog docked after this date from being shown in Northern Ireland. dogs docked before this date may still be shown under current legislation. read full story / add a comment |
