national / miscellaneous / press release Wednesday February 18, 2009 21:18 by Helen T
There was standing room only in UCC last night as Dr david Prentice and Wesley Smith addressed a seminar on embryonic stem cell research. Although UCC academics who had supported the proposal to introduce embryonic stem cell research were asked to debate, they didn't seem up to the challenge. More than 300 people heard from Dr david Prentice, an internationally recognized expert in stem cell research who tracks the success of adult stem cell treatments across the world. Last year the prestigious magazine Science published his work in this area. He was joined by Wesley Smith, a renowned ethicist who is a lively and much-sought after debater and commentator on many life issues. Last night, Mr Smith received sustained applause when he told a packed theatre in UCC that embarking on embryonic stem cell research would degrade the university. read full story / add a comment

Call For End To Sharia Courts After Report Shows Widespread Injustice Press Release December 17, 2008 A new report* showing that Muslim women are discriminated against and encounter gross bias when they subject themselves to Sharia adjudications was welcomed today by The One Law for All Campaign, which is supported by a variety of organisations and individuals. * http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7783627.stm The campaign’s spokesperson Maryam Namazie said: ‘This research reinforces our own findings that Sharia Councils and Muslim Arbitration Tribunals are discriminatory and unfair. However, the solution to the miscarriages of justice is not the vetting of Imams coming to the UK as the report has recommended but an end to the use and implementation of Sharia law and religious-based tribunals.’ read full story / add a comment

It was probably the most important anti-war action to happen in Ireland this century – and it was certainly the most daring. At Shannon Airport five people took on the might of the US military – and put a Navy war-plane out of action.. Even more amazingly, they ultimately convinced a jury that to do so was not a crime. But the story of the Shannon Five has hardly been told, until now. For the first time, a new book reveals the inside story of an intrepid act read full story / add a comment
