‘“Whistleblower” exposed a hospital world of cover up and concealment that is still with alive. Symphysiotomy was as much an institutional abuse as invountary sterilisation. Survivors of symphysiotomy have called upon the Government to initiate an independent inquiry into these childbirth operations on the grounds that they amounted to medical malpractice.

A common sense approach to forthcoming parades must prevail. To that end, G.A.R.C. take this opportunity to call upon catholic/Nationalist and Republican people from near and far to come and stand shoulder to shoulder with the beleaguered Ardoyne community for the twelfth of July parade. Only together can we stop being treated as second-class citizens at the behest of sectarian bigots.

A Dublin Cemetery has been discovered as the gravesite of forgotten children from the Bethany Home Dublin. Bethany Home was associated with the Church of Ireland and Church of Ireland missionary society, the Irish Church Missions to Roman Catholics. It operated in Blackhall Place, Dublin, from 1921-34 and in Orwell Road, Rathgar, until it closed in 1972.

The Bethany Home was a combined maternity home, children’s home and place of detention for women convicted of petty theft, prostitution, infanticide and birth concealment.

The home and the religious ethos that sustained and ran it was part of what James Smith of Boston College in his book, ‘Ireland's Magdalen Laundries and the Nation's Architecture of Containment’ (2007), termed an Irish ‘containment culture’ that focused on single women and effectively criminalised childbirth out of wedlock. read full story / add a comment

(CAIRO) Gaza Freedom Marchers yesterday, 1st January 2010, approved a declaration aimed at accelerating the global campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli Apartheid.

Roughly 1400 activists from 43 countries converged in Cairo on their way to Gaza to join with Palestinians marching to break Israel's illegal siege. They were prevented from entering Gaza by the Egyptian authorities.

As a result, the Freedom Marchers remained in Cairo. They staged a series of nonviolent actions aimed at pressuring the international community to end the siege as one step in the larger struggle to secure justice for Palestinians throughout historic Palestine.

The following declaration arose from those actions: read full story / add a comment

I would like to respond to a number of Sinn Féin driven articles, letters and texts printed in the North Belfast News last week that included spurious claims against the Republican Network for Unity (RNU). The RNU is an Irish political pressure group with organised branches nationwide. We are not a political party and are not constituted as such. RNU subscribe to the 1916 Proclamation and the attainment of a 32 County Democratic Socialist Republic. Our goal is to promote and maintain core republican values and achieve our objectives by strengthening partnerships with strategically allied organisations, including Republican political parties, trade Unions, socialist and ex-prisoner groups.
