The publication of the long awaited “The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Report” into abuse suffered by children and young people at the hands of religious orders while detained in residential institutions has exposed as never before the deep class hatred of working people and the rural poor that permeated the state, government and its agencies as well as the catholic Church itself. News comes through of the sudden death in Ithaca, New York, of friend and anti-war resister Peter De Mott. Peter was injured in a work accident dying in surgery on Thursday night. Peter's death leaves wife Ellen, four daughters and many of us in the anti-war resistance community with heavy hearts. read full story / add a comment

The Oireachtas voted the Commission over €5 million to enable it do its job of informing citizens what the Lisbon referendum was about. Rarely can public money have been spent to such ill effect. The Commission spent €2.7 on media advertising. It paid An Post €1 million to deliver 2.2 million information handbooks to households. In the circumstances it was a democratic miracle that the majority of Irish voters rejected the proposal to amend the Irish Constitution. If the Commission had done the job it was statutorily required to do, the No-side majority would almost certainly have been much larger, for people would have learned of the constitutional revolution which Lisbon proposed, instead of being kept in ignorance of it. read full story / add a comment

WASHINGTON, DC – Friday afternoon (Jan 11th.), over 80 activists organized by Witness Against Torture delivered a message to the U.S. Supreme Court demanding the shut-down of the U.S. prison at Guantánamo and justice for those detained there. 35 activists were arrested inside the Court building and another 35 on the steps. read full story / add a comment

On the morning of Monday 18th of June. The squatted autonomous social centre Villa squattus dei in Leuven Belgium was evicted. The Eviction came without warning, giving the squatters no chance to remove their belongings. Thankfully as the squat had only been used as a social centre for the last few months and not as living space, no one was inside, and no arrests were made.
