Ógra Shinn Féin will welcome delegates to Omagh in October for their fifth annual Demilitarisation Weekend. Youth from throughout the 32 Counties as well as International delegations from Britain and the basque Country will converge to ‘claim victory’ according to local Ógra Shinn Féin chairperson Barry McNally.

The weekend, organised from the 6th – 8th October will be the fifth annual weekend focussing on British demilitarisation in the County Tyrone town. In the past the weekend has been the target of hoax bomb alerts and huge British military and RUC surveillance.

'Rock Against The Blocks' are Republican Youth concerts and were a common feature during the Hungerstrike of 1981, they were organised by 'Youth Against The H Blocks' who mobilised massive support behind the Prisoners 5 Demands, through the use of popular and direct action means.

25 years on from the 1981 Hungerstrike, and from the original ‘Rock Against The Blocks’, Ógra Shinn Féin have revived the youth concerts.

Young republicans and basque ex-pats discussed ETA's recent ceasefire, and the basque Left-Abertzale's peace initiative. Topics such as political prisoner's issues and the prevalence of political policing and harassment also came up.

A protest will take place at seven o'clock, Wednesday 15th outside the Spanish embassy in support of the basque prisoners currently incarcerated in French and Spanish goals, and in particular to highlight the recent deaths of two basque prisoners, Igor Angulo and Roberto Sainz.

The Spanish embassy is located on the Merlyn park road, just off the Merrion road, Ballsbridge.
