The current focus on low pay and precarious work practices has set the scene for the work of the recently formed Low Pay Commission in the Republic of Ireland. The eleventh issue of the Irish Anarchist Review goes to press in the middle of the biggest battle in the war against austerity in Ireland to date. Tens of thousands of people have taken part in mass demonstrations against the water charges, up and down the country thousands have taken part in acts of physical resistance against water meter installation and hundreds of thousands, at the very least, are getting ready to participate in a mass boycott of the charge. Furthermore, the level of political consciousness of the population has risen considerably over the last year, with a distinct anti-establishment atmosphere, and in some cases an anti-state atmosphere, developing read full story / add a comment
international / environment / press release Thursday April 30, 2015 18:57 by Animal Protection Ireland
Irish animal protection groups are shocked to learn from FOI reports that the National Parks & Wildlife Service, following "discussions" with Arts & Heritage Minister Heather Humphreys, decided not to sanction two coursing clubs for clear breaches of license conditions that supposedly apply to the holding of all coursing events, and that she gave them the green light to continue coursing hares during the 2014/15 season, despite what the NPWS officials referred to as the “seriousness of the incidents at these meetings”. read full story / add a comment
international / rights, freedoms and repression / press release Wednesday April 22, 2015 12:15 by Against Fox hunting
Fox hunters are making life a complete misery for farmers in Ireland. They trespass on their lands, rip up fields of crops, destroy fencing, spread disease, and scatter flocks and herds in all directions as they stampede across farm boundaries, heedless of the damage they cause. Farmers Against Foxhunting and Trespass (FAFT) is campaigning for a ban on fox hunting in Ireland and upholds the right of all landowners to refuse permission to hunts that want to bully their way onto their lands. Last week, FAFT mounted a demo outside IFA HQ in Dublin to highlight the conflict of interest in the IFA's use of a helpline solicitor who happens to have a long high profile association with foxhunting. Also, the demo drew attention to the plight of two County Kilkenny farmers who have been subjected to a horrific ordeal of harassment and intimidation by fox hunters. read full story / add a comment

The Environmental Pillar is calling on the government to strengthen the Climate Bill in light of sharp criticism for lack of action. The Environmental Pillar, which is made up of 28 Irish environmental NGOs, is calling on TDs and Senators to amend the Climate Bill. Today a European Commission working document was published which described Ireland’s climate change commitments as ‘insufficient’. The EC Country Report Ireland 2015 working document states: “No progress was made in identifying how Ireland commits itself to meeting its existing, binding climate and energy targets for the period up to 2020 in an integrated way and how best to use the earmarked, available EU support for the structural development needed in the different areas.” read full story / add a comment

Press Release - Feb 1st - The Irish Government and media appear to be in a panic about two Russian TU-95 bomber aircraft that flew down the west coast of Ireland at least 50 miles out to sea, and not through Irish sovereign airspace. A statement issued by the Irish Department of Defence said "non-controlled and non-notified flight activity by Russian aircraft is not acceptable". This same Department of Defence of a supposedly neutral Irish state has issued no such statements about the transit of almost two and half million US troops through Shannon airport since 2001, and provides Irish soldiers to guard US military aircraft at Shannon. read full story / add a comment

ANIMAL ABUSE aka BLOODSPORTS WILL HAVE SURVIVED 101 YEARS in Millstreet. The annual Millstreet Hare coursing event set for 3rd/4th Jan 2015 has already caused disgruntled locals to contact ourselves and other direct action Animal rights Groups. This cruel spectacle actually takes place on a GAA pitch in a local public park. The park in the centre of the town, a favourite with locals, dog walkers, footballers etc however is disrupted for four weeks a year and actually has a rusty dump of an enclosure permanently in place to hold the netted hares for the coursing two day event. All this is allowed in a public park such is the power of the Town Park Committee. The opposition to ending this has prompted people to release the hares on many occasions but sadly they get recaptured and coursed, it fails as too many obstacles stop their escape and they are enclosed behind more wire than can be dismantled, until maybe this year if locals do not give up. read full story / add a comment

national / environment / press release Tuesday August 26, 2014 15:05 by Woodland League
Press Release - Woodland League The public amenity forest at Gougane Barra, co Cork has been clear-felled for no good reason. This is the claim of an internationally renowned Irish tree-scientist and a number of Irish NGOs. In January 2014, Coillte, the Irish Forestry Board, contended that ‘sudden oak-death’ (Phytophtera ramorum) had infested the veteran larch trees in the forest and that urgent clear-felling was essential. Documentary evidence purporting to support this assertion dated July 2013 has been branded tenuous at best by Diana Beresford-Kroeger the renowned Irish tree-scientist who saw no sign of the disease while filming in the forest in August of that year. read full story / add a comment

WAKE UP COVENEY…..STOP THE LYING, -WE DO SNARE 6000 BADGERS A YEAR RANTINGS FROM OUR AGRICULTURE Minister in the video below "What we are continuing to do is have a humane and targeted cull of badgers which does not involve snares or anything like that. It involves trapping and catching badgers and putting them down in as humane a way as we can." EVEN BADGERS KNOW WHAT A SNARE IS! EVEN BADGERS KNOW WHAT A SNARE IS! SEE THE MINISTER LYING NOW …LINK HERE BELOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oRSnDcJOxo&feature=you...1m52s Snaring IS the method used to trap badgers by the Department of Agriculture despite the Minister’s outrageous attempt to deny and conceal this fact. Who is he trying to hoodwink? The AOHS believes that the method of capture is a barbaric wire snare which holds the helpless badger in excruciating pain until it is dispatched by gunshot or clubbed to death the next morning at the earliest as some accounts by farmers have revealed. That is if the badger has not been strangled beforehand by the snares wire. When nursing female badgers are snared and shot, their cubs are left to starve to death underground. The DOA refuse to allow a period for lactating badgers to raise their young without risk of torture" read full story / add a comment

Greystones Harbour was opened to the public almost two years ago, in November 2012. The marina opened for summer 2013. However, despite written agreements and promises from the developer, the commercial fishers of Greystones have been refused access to the harbour and promised berths or moorings have not been offered to us. We are today entering the harbour and landing freshly caught fish, against regulations, as a protest against this continued exclusion from the harbour, which only two weeks ago included the removal of mooring cleats from the harbour’s north pier in order to prevent boats tying up. read full story / add a comment
national / anti-capitalism / press release Tuesday August 05, 2014 14:09 by Campaign for Skellig
The filming of scenes for Star Wars: Episode VII began yesterday on Skellig Michael in Co Kerry. Many have expressed outrage at the underhanded way in which this information was kept from the Irish public until a few days ago. The Irish Independent has learnt that when negotiations began over six months ago it was feared if news of the proposed filming leaked out it could attract opposition from conservation groups. Also, At a time when Gaza is suffering a genocide at the hands of the Israeli government, the Irish government has underhandedly permitted Disney, (a company which is on every boycott list of companies which support Israel), who acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 billion (wiki), to come into Ireland and film on one of our most sacred and ancient sites. read full story / add a comment |
