Today in Belmullet district court Shell and Mayo County Council stood co-accused in a case for blocking the road during the disastrous attempt to deliver the Tunnel Boring Machine to Shell's tunnelling site at Aughoose in August this year. The co-accused settled out of court with the plaintiff and had the case struck out before the details were made public. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday morning 8 campaigners from the Rossport Solidarity Camp blocked workers from entering Shells main work site for the Corrib Pipeline project for 2 hours. A second action later in the day halted work at the Glengad compound, where Shell are expanding their compound to build a landfall valve. read full story / add a comment

''Five TDs, cosy in the warmth of the taxpayer-subsidised Dail members' bar, played a cruel prank on independent TD Mattie McGrath as he battled on behalf of a farmer in trouble with a financial institution.

As Mr McGrath, who is diabetic, was in the 10th hour of a sit-in at the offices of Friends First along with five others, Dail colleagues were creased with laughter as they made a hoax call purporting to be from Pizza Hut, offering free pizza to the protesters.

In on the mocking skit were Labour's Michael McCarthy, Fine Gael deputies Tom Hayes and Patrick O'Donovan and Fianna Fail TDs Michael Moynihan and Dara Calleary.

Mr McGrath fell for the joke, he admitted yesterday.

In the call, Mr McCarthy who has a reputation as a mimic, purported to be an Italian.

"They should be ashamed of themselves. While they were warming their backsides in Leinster House, Mattie McGrath was out working for a farmer who wasn't even in his constituency," he said.''

Overheard in Dublin 2. Leaving the rich untouched while bleeding the people dry appears possibly an official policy. Based largely on an assumption that there is 'really no suffering' and those claiming pain are delusional, our leaders suffer little and act accordingly. Three out of our top four ministers were once teachers, they have had long and successful political careers and have never known the suffering that comes from austerity. There is an insidious absence of understanding for those who carry this state, the workers for the most part in the private sector who provide vital services and support through tax for the equally vital services provided by our state. These privately generated taxes are vital, without which there would be not support. The forthcoming budget has apparently not been discussed in An Dáil though is only days away. We were praying for a miracle but it never materialised. Germany came to Ireland thinking a 1-0 win would be enough to secure its place at the top of the group but found an Irish team just not up for the challenge. After nearly twenty minutes of two touch football all the tell tale signs where there for all to see, we were heading for a complete wipe out. Trap was lost for ideas and the players were just lost. Fifteen minutes before the end of the match I witnessed something I have never seen in an Irish team, they looked lost, dejected and void of any belief in themselves. Has Trap managed his last Irish match or will the FAI continue to whip a dead donkey in hope that the miracle everybody prayed for will will finally come true. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday night Shell's efforts to move parts of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) critical to the Corrib gas project hit another delay as protesters blocked the main gate of the refinery site with a concrete lock-on. read full story / add a comment

Main issue is defence of the right to publish

The issue of the anti-Muslim film and the grizzly torture, rape and murder of Ambassador Stevens is all about the right to freedom of speech, freedom to speak about anything, criticise anything.

One name has come up again and again during Hackgate is Alex Marunchak, who worked at the News of the World between 1981 and 2006, and who has yet to be arrested or charged in relation to any of the Hackgate police operations (Tuleta, Elvedon, et al). The condemnation by Cllr Mac Donncha of the friends and family of Mr Alan Ryan, buried on Saturday 8th September following his brutal murder on the streets of Dublin on Monday 3rd September shows how low this former "republican party" have gone.

I am no supporter of the so-called "Reals" but it is morally disgraceful that SF attacked a community in mourniing.

On Friday, October 5th, a British military band are scheduled to play at the K Club in Co Kildare. The event has been co-organised by the the Security and Emergency Services Ireland Forum (SESIF) and The Jack and Jill Foundation, with the proceeds from the event being donated to the latter organisation. The SESIF is an organisation which purports to represent those who work in the 'ambulance, coast guard, fire, military, police, rescue and prisons' services. In reality much of its energies are devoted to rehabilitating the image of the paramilitary PSNI and the British Army in Ireland. The Jack and Jill Foundation is a children's charity which provides support to sick children and their families. read full story / add a comment

Cathaoirleach éirígí Brian Leeson has condemned the planned appearance of a British Army military band in the exclusive K Club as a “sickening public relations stunt”.
